Obituaries from 1965 to 1975


27th January 1966 : Swami Yatiswarananda ji : Announced to the Public in February 1966
The passing away of our revered Vice-president, Srimat Swami Yatiswarananda ji Maharaj at the Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta, at 1-15 am on the 27th January was intimated on that very day with a heavy heart to all our centres.
Of late the Swami had been suffering from various ailments and was brought down to the Belur Math for treatment from Bangalore about six weeks ago. On the 24th January he had to be admitted to the Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta, owing to a sudden flare-up of diabetic condition accompanied by many other complications. These developed into a diabetic coma, to which he succumbed, in spite of the best medical care.
His body was brought to the Belur Math at about 7 am the same day where it was kept in the guesthouse outside the compound till Puja was over. At 11-30 am the body was brought to the Math courtyard, where thousands of devotees paid their last respects with floral offerings The last rites started at 1-15 pm and ended at 3-30 pm on the Ganga, at the south-east corner of the Math premises, in the presence of a large number of monks, devotees and friends. All the while from 7 am to 3-30 pm the Math inmates chanted Vedic verses or sang devotional songs.
He was born on 16th January, 1889 and passed away at the age of 77 years.

10 March 1966 : Swami Siddhananda : Announced to the Public in April 1966
Swami Siddhananda, aged 79, passed away on the 10th March 1966 at 10-10 a.m. at our Varanasi hospital. With dysentery and anemia accompanied by the enlargement of prostate gland he was admitted to the hospital in October, 1965. After investigation, a hard lump, detected in the Appendicular area, was suspected to be cancerous. In the meantime he was suffering from the retention of urine, and to give him immediate relief supra-pubic puncture was done. But unfortunately the cancer spread very quickly and as a result the kidney failed to function to which he succumbed.
An initiated disciple of the Holy Mother, Swami Siddhananda joined the Order in 1912 and had his Sannyasa from Sri Maharaj in 1919. He served Swami Adbhutananda ji for some years and recorded his conversations which were published later on in book form. The Swami spent almost the whole of his life at Varanasi.

18th March 1966 : Swami Jnanananda : Announced to the Public in April 1966
Swami Jnanananda, aged 74, suddenly passed away on the 18th March 1966 at 11-15 a.m. after a cerebral stroke at the Kankhal Sevashrama, where he had arrived on the 8th March after spending some days at Lucknow for treatment. He had the attack at about 6-30 a.m. and was conscious till 8-30 a.m. or so, during which period our Sadhus heard him repeating the names of Guru Maharaj and Holy Mother, keeping a photo album of theirs on the chest. The body was consigned to the Ganga at Nildhara at about 4-30 p.m.
An initiated disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami joined the Order in 1914 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Saradananda ji in 1924. He had the privilege of serving the Holy Mother for some time.

2nd May 1966 : Swami Antaratmananda (Krishnan) : Announced to the Public in June 1966
We are very sorry to announce that Swami Antaratmananda (Krishnan), aged 56, passed away on the 2nd May 1966 at 5 p.m., at the Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta, where he was admitted on the 31st March for a check-up. After investigation, his case was diagnosed as myocardial infarction with ventricular ectopics and expired due to ventricular fibrillation following myocardial infarction with diabetes mellitus with left heart failure.
He, a disciple of Swami Vijnanananda ji, joined the Order in 1938 and had his Sannyasa in 1944 from Swami Virajananda ji. He worked for some years at the Rangoon Sevashrama and then at the Trichur Ashrama till he was appointed head of the Kalady centre in July, 1963. For his sweet nature and ever-smiling face, which is a sign of contentment, he was liked by everybody.

16th June 1966 : Swami Yogatmananda (Deben Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in July 1966
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Yogatmananda (Deben Maharaj), aged 66, in our Sev aPratishthan, Calcutta, on the 16th June 1966 at 4-37 p.m. About a year back he had an attack of myocardial infarction. The recent clinical examination revealed suspicious site of malignancy in the prostate gland, and in order to check the rapid spread of the disease bilateral orchidectomy was done on the 9th June. He was progressing satisfactorily thereafter, but unfortunately on the 16th he had heart attack at about 4-15 p.m. to which he succumbed.
The Swami, a disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1921, and had his Sannyasa in 1928. He worked at Dhaka, Advaita Ashrama (Mayavati and Calcutta), Kankhal, and Varanasi Sevashrama for several years. He was very hard-working, diligent and a monk of amiable nature. Many devotees lost in him a great well-wisher of theirs.

10th August 1966 : Swami Atulananda ji (Gurudas Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in September 1966
With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Atulananda ji (Gurudas Maharaj), aged 97, at Sri Sarada Kutir, Barlowganj, on the 10th August 1966 at 2-07 a.m. owing to failure of the kidneys and uraemia. For the last 3 or 4 days of his life, he was constantly repeating ‘Jai Ma’, ‘Om Ma’ and 'Hari Om' were the last words he uttered about five hours before the eternal rest. The body was taken in a jeep to the Kankhal Sevashrama, from where at 5 p.m. it was taken in a walking procession, followed by about 150 Sadhus of the various Akharas including our own, to the Nildhara at Hardwar, where after the usual rites it was immersed in the Ganges. There were special Puja and Homa at the Math on the 21st August.
A direct disciple of the Holy Mother, Swami Atulananda ji had his Brahmacharya and Sannyasa initiation from Srimat Swami Abhedananda ji Maharaj, the former on 1st April 1899 in New York and the latter in 1923 at the Belur Math. He had the privilege of coming in intimate contact with Srimat Swami Turiyananda ji Maharaj whose life and teachings Influenced and inspired him deeply. His parental home was in Amsterdam, Holland, and his former name was Mr. C.J. Heijblom. He joined the New York centre in 1898.
26th August 1966 : Swami Pratyagananda (Vijay) : Announced to the Public in September 1966
We have also to announce with a heavy heart the passing away of Swami Pratyagananda (Vijay), aged 73, at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, on the 26th August 1966 at 4 p.m., due to cancer of the prostate gland. He had been suffering from urinary troubles for more than a year and in February last he was operated on for the enlarged prostate at the Vrindaban Sevashrama. After the operation, he felt better for about a month, but later on there was a recurrence of his troubles, which increased as days passed. Ultimately in July last he had to be removed to the above hospital for thorough investigation. Cancer of the prostate was detected there and he was operated on for the same, but it was of no avail.
A disciple of Srimat Swami Saradananda ji Maharaj, he joined the Order in 1922 at Vrindaban. He had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1928. For some years he served our centres at Katihar, Dhaka, Gadadhar Ashrama, Calcutta, and the Belur Math, but the major part of his monastic life was spent at Vrindaban.
2nd November 1966 : Swami Saradeswarananda (Nalini Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in December 1966
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Saradeswarananda (Nalini Maharaj), at the Ramakrishna Math, Kamarpukur, of which he was the head, on the 2nd November 1966 at about 4 p.m. He was 67 at the time of his death. Even though he was keeping indifferent health for a long time and was confined to bed for the last few months due to heart trouble, the end came quite unexpectedly. On receipt of the sad news some monks from the Belur Math, Saradapitha and Narendrapur went to Kamarpukur to attend the last rites. His body was cremated at the Bhutir Khal.
The Swami, a disciple of the Holy Mother, joined the Order in 1925 at the age of 26 and received Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1929. He served the Sangha with devotion in various capacities as an ardent worker at the Headquarters, and as the Secretary of the Industrial School at Belur and the Ashrama at Pathuriaghata. He worked hard for the acquisition of the birthplace of Sri Ramakrishna and it was mainly due to his untiring zeal that the Ashrama at Kamarpukur became what it is today. In him the Sangha lost a hard-working monk of amiable nature and sound judgment.

13th December 1966 : Swami Gopalananda (Gopal Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in January 1967
We are sorry to announce the passing away of swami Gopalananda (Gopal Maharaj), aged 76, at the Seva Pratishthan on the 13 December 1966 at 10 p.m. where he was admitted for fracture of the left femur neck resulting from an accidental fall.
The Swami, a disciple of the Holy Mother, joined the Order in 1912 and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj in 1918. Besides being the head of the Baliati Ashrama for a short period and spending a few years of tapasya at Vrindaban he lived his simple and austere monastic life in the Belur Math, devoting his time to worship and prayer.

30th January 1967 : Swami Budddatmananda (Shashi) : Announced to the Public in February 1967
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Budddatmananda (Shashi), aged 68, at the Belur Math, on the 30 January 1967 at about 11-45 p.m. due to cardio-respiratory failure caused by Status Asthmatics. He had been ailing for a long time from Asthma and had been to Ranchi Sanatorium several times for treatment of TB.
The Swami, a disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1922 and had his Sannyasa from him in 1929. He was the head of the Baliati and Chandipur Ashramas for some years. For the last many years he had been living in the Belur Math. In his demise the Order lost a monk of simple habits and amiable nature.
6th February 1967 : Swami Nikhilatmananda (Jugal Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in March 1967
We are very sorry to announce the passing away of Swami Nikhilatmananda (Jugal Maharaj), aged 68, at the Advaita Ashrama, Varanasi, on the 6th February 1967 at about 4 a.m. due to heart failure.
A disciple of Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1923 and had his Sannyasa from him in 1932. He worked at Baranagore, Bombay, Belur Math and Varanasi Advaita Ashrama for several years. Some years he spent at Swargashrama and Almora doing tapasya. He was a monk of simple habits and unassuming nature.

18th March 1967 : Swami Natarajananda : Announced to the Public in April 1967
We are very sorry to announce the passing away of Swami Natarajananda, aged 64, at the General Hospital at Batticaloa in Ceylon, on the 18th March 1967 at 4-45 a.m. He was not keeping well for sometime and died of severe anemia secondary to carcinoma of the head of the pancreas.
A disciple of Swami Akhandananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1934 and had his sannyasa from Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1943. He was associated with Swami Vipulananda and was for some years in Rangoon Sevashrama and also the President of the Nattarampalli Ashrama. For many years he was the General Manager of the Ramakrishna Mission School in Ceylon. He was much loved and respected by the people.
12th June 1967 : Swami Premeshananda ji : Announced to the Public in July 1967
With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Premeshananda ji, aged 83, at the Varanasi Sevashrama on the 12th June 1967 at 7-35 a.m. He was practically an invalid for the last few years and died of chronic uremia (enlarged prostate). His body was consigned to waters of the Ganga (Jala-samadhi) near Manikarnika in the presence of a large number of Sadhus.
A disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami, known as Indradayal Bhattacharya in his pre-monastic life, founded the Sylhet Ashrama in 1919, had his Sannyasa from Swami Shivananda Maharaj in 1929 and played a leading part in propagating the message of the Master throughout that district. Being inspired and attracted by his lofty idealism, simple and austere life, selfless service to the poor and motherly affection, quite a few young men renounced the world and joined the Ramakrishna Order. He was the head of the Dhaka and Sargachhi Ashramas for some time and a member of the Working Committee at the Headquarters at Belur. He spent some years in the Uttarakhanda in prayer and tapasya. After retirement from active service he lived for many years at the Sargachhi Ashrama, and then went to the Varanasi Sevashrama in 1962, where his remaining days were passed. He was a prolific writer and had to his credit a few excellent books in Bengali on Ramakrishna-Vivekananda. He composed some beautiful and inspiring religious songs in Bengali which are very popular. He combined in his life high idealism with practical wisdom. He was loved and respected by one and all for his sterling qualities of head and heart.

25th August 1967: Swami Nishchalananda (Nitai) : Announced to the Public in September 1967
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Nishchalananda (Nitai), aged 58, in our Lucknow Ashrama on the 25th August 1967 at 10 a.m. He had several heart-attacks during the last few years and was not keeping well during these years.
The Swami, a disciple of Srimat Swami Vijnanananda ji Maharaj, joined the order in 1934 and had his sannyasa from Srimat Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1943. He spent most of his monastic life serving in the Sevashramas at Varanasi, Kankhal and Vrindaban. Since 1963 he was living in Lucknow Sevashrama.

17th December 1967 : Swami Sarvatmananda (Gangadhar) : Announced to the Public in January 1968
With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Sarvatmananda (Gangadhar), aged 66, at Kamarpukur on the 17th December 1967 at 2-35 a.m. On the 12th he had a heart attack and immediately doctors were called in and all arrangements for proper treatment and nursing were made. He had another attack on the 17th morning to which he succumbed.
The Swami, a disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1922 and had his Sannyasa from him in 1929. Besides working in different departments, he was serving mainly as pujari in Belur Math, Karachi, Delhi, Lucknow, Madras, Kamarpukur and some other centres. For the last fifteen years he was at Kamarpukur. He was simple and austere in his habits, hard-working and meditative by nature. In his death the Sangha lost a very good Sadhu.
11th May 1968 : Swami Sundarananda : Announced to the Public in June 1968
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Sundarananda, aged 79, at the Belur Math, on the 11th May 1968 at 6-26 p.m. due to bilateral pneumonia. He had been ailing and almost confined to bed for the last three years.
The Swami, a disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, joined the order in 1922 and had his Sannyasa from him in 1926. He was the founder of the Baliati Ashrama and was in Colombo for some time. He successfully edited the Udbodhan from 1936 to 1952 and was the head of the Ranchi (Morabadi) Ashrama till his retirement about three years back. He had to his credit a few books in Bengali and English. A man of sterling character, he led a very simple and austere life. In his death the Sangha lost a beloved and respected brother and a dedicated worker.

31st May 1968 : Swami Baladevananda (Nitai) : Announced to the Public in July 1968
With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Baladevananda (Nitai), aged 76, at Kishanpur on the 31st May 1968 at 6-40 p.m. due to heart failure. His body was taken to Kankhal and consigned to the holy waters at Nildhara in the Ganga.
The Swami, a disciple of the Holy Mother, joined the Order in 1923 and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1928. After spending a short period at the Belur Math, he joined the Kishanpur Ashrama sometime in 1927 and stayed there till his last days. For his simple habits and amiable nature he was loved by all.

12th October 1968 : Swami Brahmatmananda (Rammay) : Announced to the Public in November 1968
Swami Brahmatmananda (Rammay), aged 69, passed away due to heart-failure on the 12th October 1968 at 12-05 p.m. at the Belur Math. He attended the Monks’ Conference in the morning and while taking bath felt pain in the heart. Doctor was immediately called in but the treatment did not produce any effect. He succumbed within half an hour.
The Swami, a disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, joined the order in 1925 and had his Sannyasa from him in 1931. He was head of the Barisal, Habiganj and Garbeta Ashramas and since 1961 was working in the headquarters. He was a hard-working monk of simple habits.

26th October 1968 : Swami Prapannananda (Sachin) : Announced to the Public in November 1968
Swami Prapannananda (Sachin), aged 62, passed away at Chandigarh on the 26th October 1968 at noon owing to heart attack. Early this year he was hospitalized for heart attack with posterior infarction. He joined the Order in 1925 and was a disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj and had his Sannyasa from him in 1932. He worked in the Varanasi Sevashrama, the Belur Math dispensary, Mayavati and Deoghar. Last few years he was at Chandigarh. He was a sincere and painstaking monk of amiable nature.

26th October. 1968 : Swami Vidhanananda (Gopal) : Announced to the Public in November 1968
Swami Vidhanananda (Gopal), aged 59, passed away at Quilandy at 5 a.m. on the 26th October 1968. He was keeping indifferent health for a long time. The previous day of his passing away he felt intense pain over the chest region and became very weak. The end came suddenly in the morning.
The Swami, a disciple of Srimat Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1941 and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shankarananda ji Maharaj in 1960. He spent his entire Sadhu life in Calicut and Quilandy Ashramas. He was loved by all for his simple and austere habits.

22nd January 1969 : Swami Atmaramananda (Phani) Announced to the Public in February 1969
With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Atmaramananda (Phani), aged 77, at the Varanasi Sevashrama, on the 22nd January 1969 at 12 noon. Recently he underwent operation for intestinal obstruction. He was suffering for a long time from urinary trouble and insomnia.
The Swami, a disciple of Swami Saradananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1917 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1929. He was head of the Kishanpur and Jamtara Ashramas and earlier lived in Belur Math for many years mainly looking after the construction work. He was very methodical and regular in his habits. In his death the Sangha lost a veteran hard-working monk.

2nd February 1969 : Swami Jnanaswarupananda (Manindra) : Announced to the Public in March 1969
Swami Jnanaswarupananda (Manindra), aged 68, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan on the 2nd February 1969 at 4-45 a.m. He had been a diabetic patient for many years and was sent to the Seva Pratishthan on the 31st January in a state of coma. Gradually his condition worsened and he passed into eternal rest.
A disciple of Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1922 and had his Sannyasa from him in 1927. For a number of years he was head of the Puri Mission Ashrama.
3rd February 1969 Swami Prashantananda (Rishi) : Announced to the Public in March 1969
Swami Prashantananda (Rishi), aged 78, passed away in the house of a devotee at Chak Jaykrishna in Midnapore district on the 3rd February 1969 at 8-10 p.m. due to chronic dysentery.
The Swami, a disciple of the Holy Mother, joined the Order in 1913 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj in 1921. He was living in a private Ashrama at Balichauk practically without any contact with the Sangha.

23rd February 1969 : Swami Aghorananda (Ganesh) : Announced to the Public in March 1969
Swami Aghorananda (Ganesh), aged 70, passed away at the Ratnam Private Hospital, Colombo, due to diabetic coma on the 23rd February 1969 at 5 p.m.
A disciple of Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1927 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Akhandananda ji Maharaj in 1936. Besides Colombo, he worked in Bombay, Belur Math, Rajkot, Ponnampet, etc.

4th March 1969 : Swami Yogindrananda (Shivatosh) : Announced to the Public in April 1969
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Yogindrananda (Shivatosh), aged 59, at the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama on the 4th March 1969 at 12-30 pm due to coronary thrombosis.
The Swami, a disciple of Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1928 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Akhandananda ji Maharaj in 1936. He worked at Bombay, Sonargaon, Deoghar and Varanasi Sevashrama. He was hard-working and very regular in his spiritual practices. For his simple and austere habits and sweet nature he was like by one and all.

25th April 1969 : Swami Vireshananda (Nakul) : Announced to the Public in May 1969
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Vireshananda (Nakul), aged 73, at the Almora Ashrama on the 25th April 1969 due to heart-failure.
The Swami, a disciple of Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj, joined the Varanasi Sevashrama in 1917 and served that centre for a long time besides working at Kankhal, Kishanpur, Almora, etc. In 1923 he had his sannyasa from Swami Saradananda ji Maharaj. He was hard-working and austere by nature. For his simple and sweet nature he was liked by one and all.

20th May 1969: Swami Yogiswarananda (Upuda) (Announced to the Public in June 1969)
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Yogiswarananda (Upuda), aged 84, at the Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta, on 20th May 1969 at 11-30 a.m. owing to cardio-respiratory failure and other complications.
The Swami, a disciple of the Holy Mother, joined the Dhaka centre in 1917 where he occasionally took part in relief works. Subsequently he lived at the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama for some time. He spent the major part of his monastic life at Belur Math leading a retired but austere life. He had his Sannyasa in 1921 from Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj. In him the Order has lost a monk, who was liked by one and all for his simplicity and Sadhu life.

1st July 1969 : Swami Raghuvirananda (Sarada) : Announced to the Public in July 1969
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Raghuvirananda (Sarada), aged 67, at the Belur Math, on the 1st July 1969 at 11-30 p.m. owing to heart-failure.
The Swami, a disciple of Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, joined the Rangoon Sevashrama in 1929, and had his Sannyasa from Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1939. He worked the Deoghar Vidyapith for a number of years and took part in the Kurukshetra relief, besides serving as head of Sylhet, Manasadwip and Ramharipur centres.

9th November 1969 : Swami Chaitanyananda (Paramesh) : Announced to the Public in December 1969
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Chaitanyananda (Paramesh), aged 72, at the Varanasi Sevashrama on the 9th November 1969 at 1-45 a.m. He had been suffering from various ailments for nearly two months till he succumbed to an attack of cerebral thrombosis.
A disciple of Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj, he joined the Order in 1914 and had his Sannyasa from him in 1922. He was all along a worker of the Varanasi Home of Service and later conducted the Shivala branch of the Home. He was a sincere and painstaking monk of amiable nature.

16th November 1969 : Swami Ghanananda : Announced to the Public in December 1969
Swami Ghanananda, aged 71, passed away in London on the 16th November 1969 at 11-57 a.m. (London time). On the 11th October he was hospitalized owing to an attack of coronary thrombosis. He was gradually recovering till he developed congestion of the lungs to which he finally succumbed.
A disciple of Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, he had his Sannyasa also from him in 1924. He joined the Madras Math in 1921 and served as joint editor of the Vedanta Kesari for some time. After some educational activities in Ceylon he was sent to Mauritius in 1939 to start a centre there. He left Mauritius in 1948 to visit some Western countries till he reached England and developed the Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre in London under the direction of the Headquarters. The rest of his life was spent there, broken only by three short visits to India. He has to his credit a few books in English.

13th December 1969 : Swami Ashokananda (Yogesh) : Announced to the Public in January 1970
Swami Ashokananda (Yogesh), aged 77, passed away at San Francisco on the 13th December 1969 at 12-45 p.m. (USA time). He had been suffering from various ailments for quite some time and was hospitalized on 1st December for kidney infection. Through there was some improvement in his condition the end came suddenly due to heart failure. The funeral took place on the 17th in which the North Californian Swamis were joined by four Swamis from other centres in the States.
The Swami joined the Order in 1920 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Shivananda ji in 1923. He was successively the editor of the Vedanta Kesari and the Prabuddha Bharata before he took charge of the San Francisco centre in 1932. Under him the centre expanded its activities and established two branches – one at Berkeley and the other at Sacramento. An erudite scholar, forceful writer and inspired speaker, the Swami was instrumental in furthering the cause of the Ramakrishna movement in the USA.

13th December 1969 : Swami Kripananda (Nagen) : Announced to the Public in January 1970
Swami Kripananda (Nagen), aged 61, passed away at the Vrindaban Sevashrama on the 13th December 1969 at 1 p.m. due to internal hemorrhage. His body was consigned to the waters of the Yamuna.
A disciple of Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1931 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1941. From 1931 to 1947 he worked in the Advaita Ashrama, Calcutta, and Vidyapith at Deoghar. From 1948 he had been in the Vrindaban Sevashrama and took charge of the centre in 1954 and developed it greatly. Amiable by nature and active in habits, the Swami was loved by one and all.

9th January 1970 : Swami Gangeshananda (Dwijen Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in February 1970
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away Swami Gangeshananda (Dwijen Maharaj), aged 77, at the Seva Pratishthan on the 9th January 1970 at 2-40 a.m. He had been suffering from emphysema and other ailments of old age. His body was cremated at the Belur Math.
The Swami, a disciple of the Holy Mother, joined the Order in 1915 and his Sannyasa from Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1923. For four years from 1916 he was the Jt. Editor of the Udbodhan. He acted as the private secretary of Mahapurush Maharaj for a long time. Later on he became the founder-president of the Kalimpong Ashrama and head of the New Delhi Ashrama. In his demise the Sangha lost a senior monk of outstanding qualities.

27th January 1970 :Swami Bhimananda (Sudin) : Announced to the Public in February 1970
Swami Bhimananda (Sudin), aged 45, passed away at the Ranchi Sanatorium on the 27th January 1970 at 8-15 p.m. as a result of coronary thrombosis.
A disciple of Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1951 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Shankarananda ji Maharaj in 1960. He had been attached to the Sanatorium for long 19 years and contributed his mite towards its growth. He was conscientious, hard-working and amiable by nature. His sudden premature death deprives the Sangha of a very promising life.

4th March 1970 :Swami Jayadananda (Yatish) : Announced to the Public in April 1970
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Jayadananda (Yatish), aged 67, at the Seva Pratishthan on the 4th March 1970 at 9.30 a.m. due to carcinoma of gall bladder with obstructive jaundice and other complications.
The Swami, a disciple of Swami Saradananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1927 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1940. He worked mostly at Bankura and then at Ramharipur. He was a hard-working monk of simple habits

21st April 1970 : Swami Siddhantananda (Mukhyapran) : Announced to the Public in May 1970
Swami Siddhantananda (Mukhyapran) , aged 65, expired at the Seva Pratishthan on the 21st April 1970 at 8 p.m. as a result of B. Coli pyelonephritis with anaemia, chronic renal failure and other ailments.
The Swami, a disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1930 and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1944. He worked mainly in Varanasi Sevashrama, Deoghar Vidyapith and Ranchi Sanatorium – nearly 12 years in each place. Contemplative by nature and austere in habits, the Swami was loved by one and all.

29th April 1970 : Swami Vishweshananda (Srikantha) : Announced to the Public in May 1970
Swami Vishweshananda (Srikantha), aged 70, passed away at the Belur Math on the 29th April 1970 at 2-35 a.m. due to sudden heart failure. Though he had been suffering from diabetes, hernia, hypertension, etc. for years, the end came quite unexpectedly.
A disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1925 and had his Sannyasa from him in 1932. Besides Belur Math dispensary where he worked for many years, he was at Kankhal and Varanasi Sevashrama for some years. He was a simple and hard-working good-natured monk.

18th May 1970 : Swami Vedananda (Bholanath) : Announced to the Public in June 1970
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Vedananda (Bholanath), aged 65, at the Kanpur Ashrama on the 18th May 1970 at 1 a.m. due to cerebral hemorrhage. His body was consigned to the waters of the Holy Ganga.
The Swami, a disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1927 and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Vijnanananda ji Maharaj in 1937. He spent nearly thirty years of his monastic life at Deoghar and Mysore. From 1957 to 1961 he was the Secretary of the Chandigarh Ashrama and of the Kanpur centre from 1964. Sweet and amiable in nature the Swami was loved by all, particularly the students.

19th June 1970 : Swami Suparnananda (Satinath) : Announced to the Public in July 1970
We are very sorry to announce the passing away of Swami Suparnananda (Satinath), aged 63, at the S.S.K.M. Hospital on the 19th June 1970 at 0-55 a.m. He had been suffering for long from blood pressure, diabetes, renal failure and other ailments and was brought down from Bhubaneswar to Seva Pratishthan from where he was removed to SSKM Hospital on the 17th May. In spite of best medical help his condition continued to deteriorate and the end came suddenly.
The Swami, a disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1932 and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1941. He was a worker of the Belur Math and Dhaka Ashrama for several years and then Secretary of the Narayanganj centre. He was appointed private Secretary of Swami Shankarananda ji Maharaj in 1952 and was with him till the latter’s passing away in 1962. The same year he was appointed president and secretary of the Bhubaneswar Math and Mission centres. The Swami was a good musician.

29th July 1970 : Swami Sadatmananda (Manindra) : Announced to the Public in August 1970
We announce with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Sadatmananda (Manindra), aged 73, at the Varanasi Sevashrama on the 29th July 1970 at 6-45 a.m. due to various ailments from which he had been suffering for many years.
A disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1927 and had his Sannyasa from him in 1931. The Swami, a medical graduate, worked for a few years at Belur Math and Kankhal Sevashrama and then retired to spend the rest of his life at Varanasi Sevashrama. He was austere in habits and contemplative by temperament.

25th September 1970: Swami Rameswarananda (Bhav Maharaj) (Announced to the Public in October 1970)
With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Rameswarananda (Bhav Maharaj), aged 77, at the Seva Pratishthan on the 25th September 1970 at 11.20 a.m. due to bleeding piles with severed anaemia and cardio-respiratory failure.
The Swami, a disciple of Srimat Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1914 and had Sannyasa from him in 1920. He was in charge of the Jamtara Ashrama from the day of its foundation till 1934. Rest of his monastic life he lived at the Belur Math. He had the rare privilege of associating intimately with some of the direct disciples of the Master for long years. Hinglaj is one of the many pilgrim centres he visited.

15th November 1970 : Swami Girishananda (Prakash Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in December 1970
We are sorry to announce the passing away of Swami Girishananda (Prakash Maharaj), aged 85, at the Varanasi Sevashrama on the 15th November 1970 at 7 p.m. due to various old-age ailments and general weakness. His body was consigned to the holy waters of the Ganga.
The Swami, a disciple of the Holy Mother, joined the Order in 1915 and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj in 1922. He worked for some time in Madras Math and a few other centres and then spent the rest of his life in tapasya at Varanasi, Rishikesh, Uttarkashi and other places. Contemplative and amiable by nature and austere in habit, the Swami was liked and respected by all.

13th December 1970: Swami Achintyananda (Manu) (Announced to the Public in January 1971)
Swami Achintyananda (Manu), aged 68, passed away at the Belur Math on 13th December 1970 at 5-30 a.m. due to acute atypical pneumonia and streptococcal arthritis.
The Swami, a disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1923 and had his sannyasa from him in 1926. He worked in the HQ, Delhi, Kankhal and Lahore Ashramas and was head of the Patna and Dinajpur centres for some years. He was a good speaker and had cultural interest.

30th December 1970: Swami Gopeswarananda (Announced to the Public in January 1971)
Swami Gopeswarananda, aged 76, passed away at the Koalpara Health Centre on 30th December 1970 at 4-20 a.m. On 11th December he came to Jayrambati from Varanasi to stay there for a few months, had a stroke on the 16th to which he ultimately succumbed.
A disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami joined the Order in 1920 and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1929. He was the head of the Habiganj Ashrama from 1925 to 1948 and then of Karimganj and Contai Ashramas till 1968. In Habiganj he did good work among the cobbler community for their economic and cultural uplift.

11th May 1971 : Swami Tejasananda : Announced to the Public in June 1971
Swami Tejasananda, aged 75, passed away at Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta, on the 11th May 1971, at 7-35 p.m. due to respiratory failure caused by massive gastrointestinal hemorrhage following hepatic cirrhosis. The Swami had a premonition of the date of his final departure and on the 9th May he told his attendant that he would pass away on the 11th, which he actually did. He was conscious till last and looked for some time at the picture of Sri Ramakrishna a few minutes before passing away.
An MA of the Calcutta University, the Swami came in contact with the Belur Math during his student life and had his initiation from Srimat Brahmananda ji Maharaj in 1917. He joined the Order later in 1927 and had his Sannyasa in 1931 from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj. He served the Organization in various capacities, such as the editor of the Vedanta Kesari and the Prabuddha Bharata, the head of the Patna Ashrama and the Principal of the Vidyamandira for long twenty-three years. He was appointed a Trustee and a member of the Governing Body in 1961 and was Treasurer since 1967. He was an effective speaker and has written a few books in Bengali and English. Austere in habit and spirited and affectionate by nature, the Swami was loved and admired by all, particularly his students.

2nd May 1971 : Swami Visheshananda : Announced to the Public in June 1971
Swami Visheshananda, aged 78, passed away at the Midnapore Ashrama on the 2nd May 1971 at 10-15 a.m. Of late he had been suffering from diabetes and other ailments connected with old age to which he ultimately succumbed.
He was a disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj and had his Sannyasa in 1929. Having worked as the head of the Chandipur Math for some years, he was leading a retired life at the Midnapore Ashrama for the past few years. The Swami was a trained musician and was loved for his simple habits.
25th June 1971 : Swami Haripremananda (Haripada) : Announced to the Public in July 1971
We are sorry to announce the passing away of Swami Haripremananda (Haripada), aged about 76 , at the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama on the 25th June 1971 at 6-15 p.m. due to heart failure. The Swami, a disciple of the Holy Mother, joined the Sangha in 1917 at Koalpara Ashrama and was ordained as a monk in 1921 by swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj. He served the Holy Mother at Jayrambati for some years after which he was at the Udbodhan Office with Swami Saradananda ji Maharaj till the latter’s Mahasamadhi in 1927. He was a worker of the Advaita Ashrama, Varanasi, from about 1935 and continued to live there even after retirement. Simple in habits and guileless by nature the Swami was loved and respected by all.

17th July 1971 : Brahmachari Narayanachaitanya (Niren) : Announced to the Public in August 1971
With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Brahmachari Narayanachaitanya (Niren), aged 31, at the Deoghar Vidyapith on the 17th July 1971 at 11-00 a.m. He had been suffering from illness of long duration and the end came rather too suddenly due to cardio-respiratory failure.
A disciple of Swami Madhavananda ji, the Brahmachari joined the Sangha in 1962 at the Rahara Ashrama and was initiated into Brahmacharya in 1968 by Swami Vireswarananda ji. He was a worker of the Rahara centre till the end of 1969 when he was transferred to Ramharipur where he stayed for nearly a year. He joined the Deoghar Vidyapith only on the 11th of July last. His premature death deprives the Sangha of a very promising life.

6th November 1971: Swami Tyagananda (Chandrakishore) (Announced to the Public in December 1971)
Swami Tyagananda (Chandrakishore), aged 68, suddenly passed away of heart failure on the 6th November 1971 at 7 a.m. at the Belur Math.
The Swami, a disciple of Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1931 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1941. He worked at Deoghar Vidyapith from 1931 to 1941, at Rajkot from 1943 to 1945 and as librarian of the Belur Math Library from 1947 till his demise. He was a very conscientious worker of simple habits.

15th November 1971 : Swami Ishatmananda (Harilal) : Announced to the Public in December 1971
Swami Ishatmananda (Harilal), aged 66, expired on the 15th November 1971 at 2-45 pm due to cardio-respiratory failure at the Varanasi Sevashrama. Nearly two years back he had been struck by paralysis making him completely bed-ridden.
A disciple of Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1925 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Vijnanananda ji Maharaj in 1937. He worked for many years at the Varanasi and Kankhal Sevashramas. He was a hard-working monk with few needs.

21st November 1971 : Swami Gadadharananda : Announced to the Public in December 1971
Swami Gadadharananda, aged 64, expired on the 21st November 1971 at 12 noon at the Ranchi (Morabadi) Ashrama. He had been suffering from various ailments for quite some time.
The Swami, a disciple of Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1925 and had his Sannyasa from him in 1932. He was head of our centres at Dinajpur, Kamarpukur and Katihar, and also worked at some other centres. For his amiable nature and sweet temperament he was loved by all.
[From the book Kalikshetre Ramakrishna Math (Gadadhar Ashrama): Gadadharananda’s pre-monastic name was Ramani. When Swami Kamaleswarananda ji was the President of Gadadhar Ashrama, Swami Gadadharananda ji was the pujari there. As instructed by Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, Ramani Maharaj spent many years at Gadadhar Ashrama. So, Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj named him Swami Gadadharananda. – p. 42.]

24th November 1971: Swami Punyananda (Announced to the Public in December 1971)
Swami Punyananda, aged 68, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta, on the 24th November 1971 at 8-17 p.m. due to Lympho Sarcoma. He had been suffering from this fell disease for about three years and in spite of best treatment by experts of Calcutta and Bombay he ultimately succumbed to it. His body was removed to Rahara the same night and the next day cremated at the Cossipore Burning Ghat.
The Swami joined the Contai Ashrama in 1922. A disciple of Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, he had his sannyasa also from him in 1926. As Secretary of the Rangoon Sevashrama from 1932 to 1942 he did remarkable work for its development. He did outstanding relief work during Burma Evacuee Relief, Bengal Famine Relief and East Bengal Refugee Relief. With him as the first Secretary the Rahara Boys’ Home was started in 1944 and under his able leadership from a small orphanage it grew into one of the biggest educational institutions of the Organization. He was a member of the Working Committee at the Headquarters for some years.
He was a monk of indefatigable energy, indomitable courage, outstanding organizing ability, strong common sense and loving heart. He was also popular for his music and impressive speeches. In his demise the Sangha sustained an irreparable loss.

8th December 1971 : Swami Brahmeswarananda (Satish) : Announced to the Public in January 1972
Swami Brahmeswarananda (Satish), aged 73, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta, on the 8th December 1971 at 3-15 a.m. due to cerebral hemorrhage with cardio-respiratory failure
The Swami, a disciple of the Holy Mother, joined the Sangha in 1919 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1924. He was head of our centres at Mymensingh, Kalimpong, Bagerhat, Gadadhar Ashrama (Calcutta) and Jamtara. Last few years he was living a retired life at Belur Math. He was austere in habit and calm and quiet by nature.
14th December 1971 : Swami Kaivalyananda (Yogi Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in January 1972
Swami Kaivalyananda (Yogi Maharaj), aged 85, expired at the Varanasi Sevashrama on the 14th December 1971 at 3 a.m. due to chronic bronchitis and other old-age ailments.
A disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami joined the Order in 1913 and had Sannyasa from Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj in 1916. He lived the major portion of his monastic life at Varanasi. He was very proficient in various types of Puja.

21st February 1972 : Swami Sudiptananda (Ravi) : Announced to the Public in March 1972
Swami Sudiptananda (Ravi), aged 38, suddenly passed away at the Udbodhan on the 21st February 1972 at about 6.45 a.m. as a result of Coronary thrombosis. The Swami, a disciple of Swami Shankarananda ji Maharaj, joined the order in 1951 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Vireswarananda ji Maharaj in 1966. He was a worker of the Baranagore Ashrama for many years and worked at the Belur Math for nearly four years. For the last year he was attached to the Tamluk Ashrama. By his sweet and accommodating nature and efficiency in work the young swami endeared himself to all. His premature death deprives the Sangha of a promising life.

26th February 1972 : Swami Shambhavananda : Announced to the Public in March 1972
Swami Shambhavananda, aged 76, passed away at the Mysore Ashrama on the 26th February 1972 at 11-05 p.m. owing to coronary thrombosis. During the last few years he had not been keeping well as a result of heart attacks and ancillary complications. A disciple of Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Bangalore Ashrama in 1920 and had his Sannyasa from swami Nirmalananda ji Maharaj in 1924. He worked in the Bangalore Ashrama in 1927 and was of great help during the Bangalore case. From 1927 to 1941 he was the President of the Ponnampet Ashrama. Under his able management the Ashrama made good progress and became popular. He started and organized bee-keeping industry all over Coorg, thus benefiting the local people. He took charge of the Mysore Ashrama in 1941 and was successfully conducting its affairs till his sad demise. He was appointed a Trustee and a member of the Governing Body in 1965. The Mysore Ashrama owes much to him for its present status.

26th February 1972 : Swami Japananda : Announced to the Public in March 1972
Swami Japananda, aged 80, passed away at Deesa (Near Ahmedabad) on the 26th February 1972 at 3 p.m. A disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami joined the Order in 1916 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj in 1921. Except for a few years at Belur Math and for one year at Dhaka as its head, he lived outside mostly in Gujarat and Rajasthan spending his time in Tapasya and preaching, occasionally visiting our centres for short periods. He had written a few booklets in Hindi and Gujarati. For his austere habits and sweet nature, he was respected by all.

19th February 1972 : Swami Vagiswarananda II (Mahendra) : Announced to the Public in April 1972
Swami Vagiswarananda II (Mahendra), aged 72, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan on the 19th February 1972 at 2-20 am owing to cardio-respiratory failure caused by adeno carcinoma of duodenum. A disciple of Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1936. Besides Belur Math he worked in our centres at Contai, Kankurgachhi (Yogodyan), Deoghar, Ranchi, Lucknow and Jayrambati. He was an energetic worker of amiable disposition and had good knowledge in agriculture and gardening.

29th February 1972 : Swami Vagiswarananda : Announced to the Public in April 1972
We are sorry to announce the passing away of Swami Vagiswarananda, aged 88, at the Kalady Ashrama on the 29th February 1972 at 4.40 p.m. as a result of cerebral thrombosis. A disciple of Swami Nirmalananda ji Maharaj, the Swami had his Sannyasa from him in 1923. He was formally admitted to the Order in 1938. He worked in some of our centres in Kerala, viz. Tiruvalla, Palai, etc. and did much to propagate the message of the Master in that State. He was loved and respected for his sweet and devotional nature.

6th April 1972 : Swami Deshikananda : Announced to the Public in May 1972
Swami Deshikananda, aged 84, passed away at a nursing home in Bangalore on the 6th April 1972 at 7-50 p.m. as a result of various old-age ailments. A disciple of Swami Nirmalananda ji Maharaj, the Swami had his Sannyasa from him in 1924 after joining the Order in 1923. He worked in our branches at Bangalore, Bombay etc and served as the head of Mysore and Salem centres. He was leading a retired life for the last few years and had come to Bangalore only in January last for check-up and treatment. A monk of austere habits and contemplative nature, he was highly respected by those who came in his close contact.

28th April 1972 : Swami Paramatmananda : Announced to the Public in May 1972
Swami Paramatmananda, aged 83, succumbed to a heart attack at the Madras Math on the 28th April 1972 at 6-40 p.m. A disciple of Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1942 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1945. Except working in the Mysore Vedanta College for some time he spent most of his life at the Madras Math serving mainly in the publication department. He wrote a few books in Tamil and was the editor of our Tamil monthly Sri Ramakrishna Vijayam for many years. Simple in habits and sweet by nature, the Swami was loved and respected by all.

29th April 1972 : Swami Sukhananda : Announced to the Public in May 1972
Swami Sukhananda, aged 82, passed away on the 29th April 1972 at 11-00 a.m. in Kanchipuram. A disciple of Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj, the Swami also had Sannyasa from him in 1921 after joining the Order in 1913. He worked in our centres at Bangalore, Trivandrum, etc. and was the head of the Kanchipuram Ashrama for a long time. Simple and austere in habits, sweet and affectionate by nature, the Swami endeared himself to everybody. For his exemplary Sadhu life he was respected by all.
26th May 1972 : Swami Lokeshananda (Mahavir) : Announced to the Public in June 1972
With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Lokeshananda (Mahavir), aged 76, at the Lucknow Sevashrama on the 26th May 1972 at 4-15 a.m. due to pulmonary edema and other complications.
The Swami, a disciple of Srimat Swami Saradananda ji Maharaj, joined the Order in 1918 and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1926. He worked in our Ashramas at Varanasi, Allahabad, Bombay, Bhubaneswar, Lucknow and Shyamla Tal serving mostly in the medical department. At the Shyamla Tal centre he worked for nearly thirty years till he came down to Lucknow in 1968. Sweet and affectionate by nature, the Swami endeared himself to those who came in his close contact.

15th June 1972 : Swami Paratmananda (Girish) : Announced to the Public in July 1972
We are sorry to announce the passing away of Swami Paratmananda (Girish), aged 75, at the Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta, on the 15th June 1972 at about 1-00 p.m. due to cardiac and other ailments. A disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj he also had Sannyasa from him in 1926 after joining the Order in 1920. He served the Sevashramas at Varanasi, Kankhal and Vrindaban besides working in the Pathuriaghata Students’ Home, Deoghar Vidyapith, Belur Math, etc.
A Sadhu of simple habits and an affectionate heart he had great devotion to work, which he performed with great zeal, in spite of his old age and failing health, till his retirement at Belur Math in 1970.

18th July 1972 : Swami Ajayananda : Announced to the Public in August 1972
With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Ajayananda, aged 75, at the Varanasi Sevashrama on the 18th July 1972 at 8-03 a.m. For the last few years he had been suffering from various old-age ailments to which he ultimately succumbed.
A disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami had his Sannyasa from him in 1931 after joining the Order in 1927 at the Varanasi Sevashrama. Besides serving at the headquarters and the Probationers’ Training Centre, he worked in our branches at Pathuriaghata (Calcutta), Deoghar, Kankhal, Madras (Math), Belur (Saradapitha), Jamshedpur and Bombay. For brief periods he was the head of Kankhal, Jamshedpur and Pathuriaghata centres. In the early fifties, he was sent to the United States where he was the Assistant Minister at the Providence centre for about two years. Amiable and sweet by nature, the Swami was loved by those who came in his close contact.

1st August 1972 : Swami Shailajananda : Announced to the Public in September 1972
With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Shailajananda, aged 85, at the Trivandrum Ashrama on the 1st August 1972 at 3.30 pm. He had been ailing for the last several years from cardiac asthma to which he ultimately succumbed.
A disciple of Srimat Swami Nirmalananda ji Maharaj, the Swami also had Sannyasa from him in 1923 after joining the Order in 1923. He joined the Tiruvalla Ashrama and spent a number of years there. Of late he was leading a retired life at the Trivandrum Ashrama. For some time he was the editor of our Malayalam monthly, Prabuddha Keralam. The Swami was loved for his simple and austere habits.

19th October 1972 : Swami Vishokananda (Priti) : Announced to the Public in November 1972
Swami Vishokananda (Priti), aged 75, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta, on the 19th October 1972 at 11-25 p.m. due to colonic malignancy and sudden cardio-respiratory failure.
A disciple of Srimat Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1922 and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1925. A trusted worker of the Calcutta Students’ Home from its very inception, he was for a long period the Treasurer of the Home and afterwards became its President for some time. Amiable and sweet by nature and endowed with a large heart and a keen sense of humour, the Swami was loved by all who came in his contact. His loss leaves a gap in the life of the Students’ Home which it is difficult to fill up.

25th October 1972 : Swami Vitashokananda (Satu) : Announced to the Public in November 1972
Swami Vitashokananda (Satu), aged 61, passed away at Kamarpukur on the 25th October 1972 at 6-10 p.m. due to an attack of coronary thrombosis. Of late he had been suffering from cardiac complications.
A disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Sangha in 1936 and was ordained into Sannyasa by Srimat Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1944. He joined the Calcutta Students’ Home and thereafter worked in the Belur Vidyamandira and the Institute of Culture, Calcutta. He was the head of our branches at Singapore, Patna, Baghbazar (Calcutta), Belur (Sardapitha), and Kamarpukur. He took part in various relief activities of the Order and did commendable work in connection with the publication of the Great Women of India. Genial by disposition, his was a lovable personality.

5th November 1972 : Swami Prajnanananda (Makhan Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in December 1972
Swami Prajnanananda (Makhan Maharaj), aged 76, passed away at the Irwin Hospital, Delhi, on the 5th November 1972, at 1-10 a.m. due to cardiac arrest.
A disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami joined the Order at Belur Math in 1919 and had his Sannyasa in 1924 from Srimat Swami Saradananda ji Maharaj. An adept in hospital management, he worked in the Varanasi Sevashrama and was the head of our hospital centres at Vrindaban and Kankhal. In 1969 he took charge as President of the Kishanpur Ashrama and held that post till his final departure. In him we have lost a monk of simple habits and austere nature.

13th November 1972 : Swami Deveshananda (Prabhas Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in December 1972
Swami Deveshananda (Prabhas Maharaj), aged 74, passed away on the 13th November 1972, at 8-22 a.m. after prolonged hospitalization at the Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta. He had been suffering from diabetes for a long time and lately had developed cirrhosis of liver.
A disciple of Srimat Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami had Sannyasa from him in 1925 after joining the Sangha in 1920. Besides working at Kankhal and Belur Math he served as the head of our Ashramas at Kanpur, Lucknow and Shyamla Tal. Sweet and amiable by nature , he was loved by all who came in contact with him.

9th December 1972 : Swami Shailananda : Announced to the Public in January 1973
With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Shailananda, aged 91, at the Varanasi Sevashrama on the 9th December 1972 at 10-35 p.m. due to cardiac failure. Of late he had been suffering from various old-age complications.
A disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami joined the Baghbazar Math in 1914 and was the head of the Garbeta centre for a long time. For the last few years he had been leading a retired life.

14th January 1973: Swami Santoshananda (Ashesh Maharaj) (Announced to the Public in February 1973)
With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Santoshananda (Ashesh Maharaj), aged 78, at the Calcutta Students’ Home, Belgharia, on the 14th January 1973 at 9.15 p.m. as a result of a heart attack at 8-30 p.m. He was conscious till the end with the name of the Holy Mother on his lips.
A disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Saradananda ji Maharaj in 1923. He joined the Order at the Calcutta Students’ Home in 1920 and continued to be a trusted worker of the institution almost from its inception. He was also its Head from 1949 to 1967. A monk of genial temperament, he was loved and adored by all for his exemplary Sadhu life, steadfastness and working efficiency.
11th March 1973 : Swami Gunatitananda (Gopal Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in April 1973
With great sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Gunatitananda (Gopal Maharaj), aged 75, at Belur Math in the morning of the 11th March 1973 due to heart failure.
A disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj the Swami had Sannyasa from him in 1926 after joining the Order the same year. He worked for some years at the Bombay Ashrama and was then transferred to Belur Math where he had been leading a retired life. The Swami was a good Sanskrit scholar and had great love for the study of the scriptures.

8th May 1973 : Swami Omkarananda ji Maharaj : Announced to the Public in June 1973
With deep sorrow we record the passing away of Srimat Swami Omkarananda ji Maharaj, aged 77, at the Kankurgachhi Yogodyan, Calcutta, on Tuesday, the 8th May, 1973, at 4-50 p.m. from heart failure. He had been ailing for sometime past.
His body was brought to the Belur Math at about 10 p.m. the same night and it was kept in the Foreign Guest house till 10-15 a.m. the next day during which time the Brahmacharis of the Training Centre and monks of the Math kept vigil with songs and chanting. Hundreds of devotees paid their last respects with floral offerings to the Swami in the morning. The last rites started at 10-30 a.m. and ended at 1-40 p.m. in the presence of a large number of monks, devotees and friends.
Special Puja and Bhandara were held at the Math on the 20th when about 6,000 devotees were given Prasad. A well-attended memorial meeting presided over by Swami Gambhirananda was held in the evening.
An initiated disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami joined the Order in 1919 at the Bhubaneswar Math and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1923. He was elected a Trustee of the Ramakrishna Math and a member of the Governing Body of the Ramakrishna Mission in 1929 and was appointed a Vice-president on the 22nd February, 1966, which office he held till the end. He was the Manager of the Belur Math for some time and the head of the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama (1944-51) and the Kankurgachhi Yogodyana (1951-73).
An erudite scholar and a forceful speaker, he was at the same time an expert in ritualistic performances. Though outspoken by nature he had a tender heart, which endeared him to all who came in his close contact. In administrative matters of the Math and the Mission his sound advice and able guidance were of great value. His sad demise is an irreparable loss to the organization and creates a void difficult to be filled up. The devotees lost in him a spiritual guide whose understanding, affection and sympathy were an asset to them.

25th May 1973 : Swami Kedarananda (Phani) : Announced to the Public in June 1973
With great sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Kedarananda (Phani), aged 64, at the Varanasi Sevashrama on the 25th May 1973 at 1-45 am, owing to coronary thrombosis and acute heart failure. He was keeping tolerably well but the end came suddenly.
An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order at Belur Math in 1940 and had his Sannyasa from him in 1948. A qualified physician, he worked at our Barisal Ashrama for some time and then joined the Varanasi Sevashrama in 1941 where he worked till the end.
Amiable and simple by nature, he was a sincere and capable worker and did much for the Varanasi hospital.

12th June 1973 : Swami Mrityunjayananda (Nagen) : Announced to the Public in July 1973
With great sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Mrityunjayananda (Nagen), aged 63, at the Vrindaban Sevashrama on Tuesday, the 12th June 1973, at 1-00 am owing to various complications associated with diabetes. Of late, he had become practically invalid.
An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1931 at the Calcutta Students’ Home and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1941. He worked at Deoghar, Mayavati and the Calcutta Students’ Home and was the head of the Asansol Ashrama from April, ’44 till he retired in July, ’68 owing to ill health. Amiable and of simple nature, the Swami endeared himself to all who came in contact with him.

21st July 1973 : Swami Nikhilananda : Announced to the Public in August 1973
Swami Nikhilananda, aged 78, passed away at the Thousand Island Park retreat of the New York Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Centre on the 21st July 1973 at about 7 p.m. (USA time) owing to cardiac infraction. He had gone to the retreat with Swami Adiswarananda and others to spend the summer recess. While having his dinner that evening he had a sudden heart attack to which he succumbed almost immediately despite prompt medical attention. Swami Sarvagatananda from Boston and a number of devotees from New York and other places attended the funeral service held on the 22nd. The same day his body was cremated at a crematorium about 80 miles away. A memorial meeting will be held on the 2nd September at New York.
A disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami joined the Order at the Mayavati centre in 1922 and had Sannyasa in 1924 from Srimat Swami Saradananda ji Maharaj. He was at Mysore Ashrama for two years for special study of the Vedanta philosophy before he was sent to the USA in 1931. In 1933 he founded the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Centre in New York and was its spiritual leader until a short period before his passing away. The Swami was a good speaker and impressive conversationalist. He authored nearly half a dozen books in English besides translating the Kathamrita and some Sanskrit scriptures into English. In him the Order has lost an erudite scholar who did much in spreading the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda movement in the West.

26th July 1973 : Swami Vaikunthananda : Announced to the Public in August 1973
Swami Vaikunthananda, aged 72, passed away at the Kankhal Sevashrama on the 26th July 1973 at 11-30 am owing to sudden heart failure.
He joined the Order in 1920 at the Kankhal Sevashrama and had his initiation and Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj. Austere by habit, the Swami spent the major part of his monastic life in tapasya, working at times in Kankhal, Rangoon, Almora and other centres. Of late he had been leading a retired life at the Kankhal Sevashrama.

4th August 1973 : Swami Sitananda (Satya) : Announced to the Public in September 1973
Swami Sitananda (Satya), aged 57, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta, on the 4th August 1973 at 7-07 pm owing to diabetes mellitus with pulmonary tuberculosis. He had been ailing for a long time.
A disciple of Srimat Swami Vijnanananda ji Maharaj, he joined the Order in 1943 and had his Sannyasa in 1952 from Srimat Swami Shankarananda ji Maharaj. He worked at Gadadhar Ashrama, Udbodhan and the Kalimpong Ashrama. For the last one year he was at the Belur Math until the hospitalization on the 14th July. An expert Pujari, the Swami had special study of Sanskrit. He was a quiet Sadhu with simple habits and amiable nature.

30th August 1973 : Swami Nirmohananda (Kanai) : Announced to the Public in September 1973
Swami Nirmohananda (Kanai), aged 71, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan on the 30th August 1973 at 11-50 am owing to an attack of cerebral thrombosis associated with heart trouble. The previous night he had an attack at the Sarisha Ashrama. After preliminary medical aid there, he was brought to Seva Pratishthan in an unconscious state the next morning and the end came within a few hours.
A disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1924 at the Sarisha Ashrama and had Sannyasa from his Guru in 1928. All along a worker of the Sarisha Ashrama, he was its Head since 1941. Amiable and social by nature, the Swami was loved and respected by many. An able administrator, his contribution to the development of numerous educational institutions at Sarisha is considerable. In him we lose an indefatigable worker and an unassuming sadhu.

1st September 1973 : Swami Vijayananda (Pasupati Maharaj): Announced to the Public in October 1973
With great sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Vijayananda (Pasupati Maharaj), aged 75, at the Ramakrishna Ashrama, Bella Vista, near Buenos Aires, on the 1st September 1973 at 3-25 am (Argentina time). He had been suffering from arteriosclerosis and coronary troubles for three or four months and later on developed pneumonia to which he ultimately succumbed.
An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order at Belur Math in 1919 and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1923. In October 1932 he was sent to Buenos Aires where the Ramakrishna Ashrama was started by him in March 1933. The Swami did pioneering work in spreading the message of Sri Ramakrishna in Latin America. He authored several books in Spanish.
An open-hearted and spirited man, the Swami endeared himself to those who came in close contact with him. In him the Order has lost a monk of great missionary zeal and spirit of dedication.

20th December 1973 : Swami Niranjanananda (Pandalai Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in January 1974
Swami Niranjanananda (Pandalai Maharaj), aged 91, passed away at Vallikkot on the 20th December 1973 at 5 pm owing to old-age ailments. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Nirmalananda ji Maharaj, he joined the Haripad Ashrama in 1921 and had Sannyasa from his Diksha-Guru in 1923. Besides serving as the Head of the Tiruvalla Ashrama for a long time, he was the editor of the Prabuddha Keralam for over twelve years and wrote a commentary on the Narada Bhakti Sutras and translated the Bhakti Yoga of Swamiji in Malayalam. Austere and energetic by nature, the Swami was one of those who were instrumental in spreading the message of Ramakrishna-Vivekananda in Kerala.

23rd December 1973 : Swami Samyananda (Purna) : Announced to the Public in January 1974
Swami Samyananda (Purna), aged 73, passed away at the Kankhal Sevashrama on the 23rd December 1973 at 12-40 pm owing to old-age debility. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1925 at Habiganj Ashrama and had Sannyasa from his Guru in 1932. After serving at the Habiganj Ashrama for a long time, he spent the later part of his life at the Kankhal Sevashrama, where, of late, he had been leading a retired life. Gentle by nature, the Swami had a lovable personality.

28th December 1973 : Swami Maheswarananda (Vaikuntha Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in January 1974
Swami Maheswarananda (Vaikuntha Maharaj), aged 83, passed away at the Varanasi Sevashrama on the 28th December 1973 at 4-15 pm owing to intestinal obstruction. An initiated disciple of Holy Mother, he joined the Order in 1915 at Belur Math and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj in 1918. He was the founder of the Bankura centre and spent almost the entire period of his active monastic life as its Head. The Ramharipur centre was also started by him. He was also in charge of the Vrindaban Sevashrama for a brief period. A qualified physician, he had the rare privilege of treating the Holy Mother during her illness. In him we have lost an unassuming monk of a quiet and contemplative nature who was loved and respected by all.

31st December 1973 : Swami Tapasananda (Lalmohan) : Announced to the Public in January 1974
Swami Tapasananda (Lalmohan), aged 74, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan on the 31st December 1973 at 3-55 pm owing to various old-age ailments. An initiated disciple of Holy Mother, the Swami joined the Order in 1915 at the Dhaka centre and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1929. He worked at our Ashramas at Dhaka, Narayanganj, Sonargaon, Baliati, etc and for the last few years had been leading a retired life at Belur Math. Very simple and open-hearted by nature, the Swami was loved by all.

7 January 1974 : Swami Ajeyananda (Balaram): Announced to the Public in February 1974
Swami Ajeyananda (Balaram) , aged 78, passed away at the Seva Prathishthan on the 7th January 1974 at 2-00 p.m. due to cardio respiratory failure. He had fractured his femur from a fall at Jayrambati about a month earlier and was brought to Seva Prathishthan for treatment. Later he developed broncho pulmonary complications. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Saradananda ji Maharaj, he joined the Order in 1925 and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Nirmalananda ji Maharaj. Most of his later life was passed at Belur Math and Jayrambati. He was a monk of simple habits and unostentatious nature.

17 January 1974 : Swami Shantananda ji Maharaj (Khagen Maharaj): Announced to the Public in February 1974
Swami Shantananda ji Maharaj (Khagen Maharaj) , aged 90, passed away at 8-21 a.m. on the 17th January 1974 at Seva Prathishthan where he was admitted on the 24th December last for treatment of prostrate trouble. He was progressing satisfactorily when suddenly his condition deteriorated and during the last seven days he developed pulmonary complications of serious nature to which he ultimately succumbed in spite of best medical care. He was conscious and peaceful till last and frequently called on the Holy Mother. His body was brought to the Belur Math where the last rites were performed.
Of religious temperament from his very childhood, he came in contact with the devotes of the Master during his school days and started frequenting Dakshineswar, Kankurgachhi, etc. Later on with a view to renouncing the world, he went to Jayrambati in 1907 and got initiation from the Holy Mother who gave him ochre clothes also. Soon after he joined the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama and received his monastic name from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj. Formal Sannyasa, however, was given by Srimat Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj in 1921.
He was appointed a Trustee of the Belur Math and a member of the Governing Body of the Mission in 1930 and continued to be so till last. He was the Head of the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama from April 1938 to May, 1944. He fell ill in 1949. After recovery he retired from active work and passed the rest of his life mostly at Ranchi Sanatorium and the Belur Math. The Swami was highly respected for his spiritual qualities and dearly loved for his sweet nature and simple habits.

26th January 1974: Swami Swayamprabhananda (Taraprasanna) (Announced to the Public in February 1974)
Swami Swayamprabhananda (Taraprasanna), aged 68, passed away during sleep at the early hours of the 26th January 1974 at the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama where he was suffering from various old-age diseases for sometime past. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, he joined the Order at Belur Math in 1928 and had sannyasa from his Guru in 1933. Besides participation in various relief works, he was at different times the head of our centres at Rangoon, Vrindaban, Lucknow, Allahabad, Shillong and Varanasi (Advaita Ashrama). He was a very competent worker with strong common sense and good administrative capacity.

17 February 1974 : Swami Atmarupananda (Rajen Maharaj): Announced to the Public in March 1974
Swami Atmarupananda (Rajen Maharaj), aged 87, passed away at the Varanasi Sevashrama on the 17th February 1974 at 7-30 a.m. owing to heart failure. He had been suffering from various old-age ailments for the last few years. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, he joined the Order at Kankhal in 1926 and had his Sannyasa ff m Srimat Swami Akhandananda ji Maharaj in 1936. The major part of his monastic life was spent as a worker of the Varanasi Sevashrama, where, of late, he had been leading a retired life. He was a steady worker and monk of simple habits.

* 19 February 1974 : Swami Shuddhasattwananda (Krishnapada): Announced to the Public in March 1974
Swami Shuddhasattwananda (Krishnapada), aged 63, passed away at the Varanasi Sevashrama on 19 February 1974 at 10 a.m. For sometime past he had been suffering from progressive degeneration of the motor nerves leading finally to the paralysis of the respiratory organ to which he succumbed. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, he joined the Order at the Contai Ashrama in 1932 and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1947. He worked in our centres at Barisal, Rangoon, Baghbazar (Calcutta), Delhi and Madras and was the head of the Deoghar Vidyapith and Saradapitha (Belur). His contribution to the publication department of the Madras Math and the development of the Deoghar Vidyapith was considerable. In him the order has lost a monk of great dynamism and organizing ability.

3 May 1974 : Swami Parashivananda (Indu): Announced to the Public in June 1974
Swami Parashivananda (Indu) , aged 74, passed away at Jhargram on the 3rd May 1974 at about 7-00 p.m. owing to heart failure. He had gone there to meet some friends. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Abhedananda ji Maharaj, he joined the Ramakrishna Vedanta Society, Calcutta, in 1922 and had Sannyasa from his Guru in 1930. Later he joined the Belur Math and was successively the head of our branches at Jalpaiguri and Malda and of late had been leading a retired life at the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama. Sweet and genial by nature, the Swami was loved and respected by many.

5 June 1974 : Swami Ishanananda (Barada): Announced to the Public in July 1974
Swami Ishanananda (Barada), aged 77, passed away at the Varanasi Sevashrama at about 4 p.m. on the 5th June 1974 owing to sudden heart failure. An initiated disciple of the Holy Mother, he joined the Order in 1911 at Koalpara and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj in 1921. The major part of his monastic life was spent at Jayrambati, Koalpara and Baghbazar Math. For short periods he worked at Belur Math, Deoghar and Varanasi centres and was head of Kamarpukur for some time. He had the privilege of serving the Holy Mother for many years and his reminiscences were much appreciated by the devotees. In him we lose a sadhu of simple habits and sweet nature.

3 July 1974 : Swami Aparnananda (Satya Maharaj): Announced to the Public in August 1974
Swami Aparnananda (Satya Maharaj), aged 78, passed away at the Varanasi Home of Service on the 3rd July 1974 at 10-25 p.m. due to cardio-respiratory failure. He had been suffering for the last few months from various old-age ailments. An initiated disciple of the Holy Mother, he joined the Order in 1917 and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj in 1922. Besides serving as the Head of Baranagore and Almora centres for long periods, he worked in different capacities at Mayavati and Bombay centres and for the last few years had been leading a retired life at the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama. Gentle and sweet by nature, the Swami had a lovable personality.

28th July 1974: Swami Bodhatmananda (Bhav Maharaj) (Announced to the Public in August 1974)
Swami Bodhatmananda (Surapati / Bhav Maharaj), aged 74, passed away at the Belur Math while asleep on the 28th July 1974 at about 4 a.m. owing to cardio-respiratory failure. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, he joined the Order at the Deoghar Vidyapith in 1924, and had Sannyasa from his Guru in 1929. He was the Principal of Probationers’ Training Centre since its inception in 1956 and was holding that post up to the last day of his life. Besides, he served in different times as the Head of Deoghar Vidyapith, Gadadhar Ashrama, Kankurgachhi Yogodyana and Nivedita Girls’ School. His deep knowledge in scriptures, his keen interest in teaching the Brahmacharins, his simple living and devotional nature earned the love and respect of all he met with. In him the Training Centre has sustained an irreparable loss.

1 September 1974 : Swami Jayananda (Shukdev): Announced to the Public in October 1974
Swami Jayananda (Shukdev) passed away at an early age of 38, at the Seva Pratishthan on 1st September 1974 at 11-20 p.m. due to cardio-respiratory failure. He had a severe heart attack at the Narendrapur Ashrama, from where he was admitted to Seva Pratishthan. He had been suffering much for the last few days with smiling face and the end came in spite of best medical care. An initiated disciple Srimat Swami Shankarananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order at Jamshedpur Ashrama in 1956 and had Sannyasa from the President Maharaj in 1966. Besides Jamshedpur and the headquarters, he worked in different capacities at Calcutta Advaita ashrama, Kanpur, Saradapitha, Purulia and Narendrapur centres. For his sweet nature, he was loved by those who came in contact with him.

24th September 1974: Swami Raghaveswarananda (Naren Maharaj) (Announced to the Public in October 1974)
Swami Raghaveswarananda (Naren Maharaj), aged 78, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan on 24th September 1974 at 1-40 p.m. due to throat cancer, from which he had been suffering for several months. An initiated disciple of Sri Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order at the Dhaka centre in 1919 and had his Sannyasa from Sri Mahapurush Maharaj in 1924. Besides serving as the Head of Dhaka centre and at the headquarters, he worked at Rangoon Sevashrama, Bhubaneswar and Bombay centres. He also served the Sangha through its various relief work at different places. For the last few years he had been leading a retired life at the Belur Math. Simple and jovial by nature the Swami was loved by all.

6 November 1974 : Swami Bhudharananda (Ganesh) : Announced to the Public in December 1974
Swami Bhudharananda (Ganesh), aged 75, passed away at Ranchi TB Sanatorium on 6th November 1974 at 10-50 p.m. due to Pulmonary TB and Parkinson’s Disease, from which he had been suffering for a long time. An initiated disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami joined the Order at Belur Math in 1923 and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1929. He worked at Madras and Udbodhan for a pretty long period and took part in Bengal Distress Relief. Simple and quiet by nature, the Swami was loved and respected by many.

24th November 1974: Swami Dharmananda (Jatin Maharaj) (Announced to the Public in December 1974)
Swami Dharmananda (Jatin Maharaj), aged 89, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan on 24th November 1974 at 9.35 a.m. due to old-age ailments, which kept him cabined for the last few months. An initiated disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami joined the Order at Koalpara in 1911, and had his Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj in 1916. Besides serving as the head of Baliati (Dhaka) Ashrama, he worked at the Belur Math dispensary for a long time. He also maintained the cash and accounts at Math office. For the last several years he had been leading a retired life at the Math. Affectionate and devotional by nature, the Swami was loved and respected by all.

4 December 1974: Swami Muktidananda (Manindra): Announced to the Public in January 1975
Swami Muktidananda (Manindra), aged 72, passed away at the Varanasi Home of Service on 4th December 1974 at 6-45 p.m. due to general debility and other ailments. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Nirmalananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order at the Dhaka centre in 1923 and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shankarananda ji Maharaj in 1959. Besides Dhaka and Belur Math, he worked at Sonargaon and Varanasi Home of Service. For the last 20 years he had been leading a retired life at the Varanasi Home of Service.

19 December 1974: Swami Shrutananda (Ramdas): Announced to the Public in January 1975
Swami Shrutananda (Ramdas) aged 64, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan on 19th December 1974 at 7-35 a.m. due to lung cancer, from which he had been suffering for long. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Vijnanananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order at Bankura centre in 1943 and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shankarananda ji Maharaj in 1954. He worked at the Bankura dispensary as a Homeopath. He was sweet and genial by nature.

20 December 1974 : Swami Sambuddhananda (Dhiren): Announced to the Public in January 1975
Swami Sambuddhananda (Dhiren), aged 83, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan on 20th December 1974 at 7 p.m. due to lung cancer and other old-age ailments. For the last several months he had not been keeping well and was at Belur Math for treatment. About two months back he was admitted to Seva Pratishthan when his condition had become serious. Only a few days back it was confirmed by doctors that he had developed lung cancer to which he ultimately succumbed in spite of best medical care.
An initiated disciple of the Holy mother, the Swami joined the Order in 1917 at Belur Math and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1923. He was the founder Secretary of Sonargaon Sevashrama, in former East Bengal and thereafter worked as the head of Dhaka, Bombay, and Varanasi Advaita Ashrama successively. Two of his great achievements had been conducting of the Centenary Celebrations of Sri Ramakrishna and Swamiji as Secretary. He participated in a number of relief operations conducted by the Mission in different parts of India. He travelled widely in India and outside. The Swami was appointed a Trustee and a member of Governing Body in 1947. The Organization has lost in him a simple and kind-hearted sadhu with a dynamic personality.

21st December 1974: Swami Vishwarupananda (Ramgati) (Announced to the Public in January 1975)
Swami Vishwarupananda (Ramgati), aged 74, passed away at the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama on 21st December 1974 sometime after the evening Arati due to acute Coronary Thrombosis. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Saradananda ji Maharaj, he joined the Order at Belur Math in 1921 and had sannyasa from his Guru in 1924. Besides Belur Math, he worked at Baranagore, Mayavati and Varanasi Home of Service before leading a retired life at the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama for the last four decades. His Bengali translation of Sankaracharya’s commentary on the Vedanta Sutras with exhaustive notes bears testimony to his deep scholarship in Vedanta Philosophy. Simple by nature, he endeared himself to those who came in contact with him.

27 December 1974 : Swami Asangananda (Panchanan): Announced to the Public in January 1975
Swami Asangananda (Panchanan), aged 76, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan, on 27 December 1974 at 5.03 p.m. due to acute left ventricular failure. He had been suffering from various ailments for the last few months at Belur Math, where he was leading a retired life. An initiated disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami joined the Order at Kankhal Sevashrama in 1921 and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1923. Besides the Headquarters and his joining centres, he worked at Madras Math and was the head of Colombo, Bhubaneswar and Srinagar (now defunct) centres. He was also a member of the Working Committee for some time.

3 February 1975 : Swami Herambananda (Hem): Announced to the Public in March 1975
Swami Herambananda (Hem), aged 64, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta, on 3rd February 1975 at 0-40 hours due to cardiovascular accident with diabetes mellitus. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order in 1929 at the Tamluk Ashrama and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1942. He was at Tamluk mostly though for some periods he also worked at Ranchi (Morabadi) and Midnapore centres. Simple by nature, he was loved by many.

12 February 1975 : Swami Gaurishananda (Nepal Maharaj): Announced to the Public in March 1975
Swami Gaurishananda (Nepal Maharaj), aged 88, passed away on 12th February 1975 at 0-35 hours at the Varanasi Home of Service, due to intestinal cancer. An initiated disciple of the Holy Mother, the Swami joined the Order in 1913 at Narayanganj (Dhaka) Ashrama and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Saradananda ji Maharaj in 1923 during the Temple opening ceremony at Jayrambati. He served the Organization in different capacities at Dhaka, Belur Math, Bombay and its Rangoon (Sevashrama) centres and conducted some relief work. For the last few decades he had been leading a retired life at the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama. For his simple habits, he was loved and respected by those who came in contact with him.

19 February 1975 : Swami Parasharananda ( Shankar): Announced to the Public in March 1975
Swami Parasharananda ( Shankar), aged 41, passed away on 19th February 1975 at the Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta. He suddenly became ill in the morning at the Udbodhan House, where he was the Pujari, and was admitted to Seva Prathishthan at about 11 a.m. in an unconscious state. In spite of best medical care, the end came at 3-25 p.m. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Vishuddhananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Lucknow Sevashrama in 1959 and had Sannyasa from the present President Maharaj in 1972. He worked also at Belur Math, Jalpaiguri, and Kamarpukur centres. The swami had a lovable personality.

8 May 1975 : Swami Vrajeshananda (Prafulla/Bhattacharjee): Announced to the Public in June 1975
Swami Vrajeshananda (Prafulla/Bhattacharjee), aged 87, passed at the Varanasi Home of Service on the 8th May 1975 at 8-20 a.m. due to Encephalitis from which he had suffering for a week. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Saradananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order at the Home of Service in 1922 and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1927. A monk of simple habits, he was loved by all.

11th May 1975: Swami Mahavidyananda (Sudhir) (Announced to the Public in June 1975)
Swami Mahavidyananda (Sudhir) of Math had a heart attack on the morning of 11th May 1975 and was admitted to Seva Pratishthan, where he breathed his last at 11.05 p.m. in spite of best medical care. He was 65. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order at Belur Math in 1936, and had Sannyasa from Srimat Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj in 1948. Besides Belur Math, where he stayed at different times, he worked at Karachi, Malda, Narayanganj, Kankhal and Vrindaban centres. For some time he was an attendant of Swami Shuddhananda ji Maharaj. He was simple and active by nature.

17 June 1975 : Swami Chidatmananda (Alopi): Announced to the Public in July 1975
Swami Chidatmananda (Alopi), aged 65, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan on the 17th June 1975 at 1-10 p.m. due to cardio-respiratory failure. He had an acute heart attack on the 7th morning at Belur Math and was immediately sent to Seva Pratishthan, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. He had been progressing satisfactorily and was shifted to the cabin on the 17th, where he met with a fresh attack to which he ultimately succumbed within a short time in spite of best medical care. Till last he was cheerful and maintained a calm and serene face.
An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Vijnanananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order at the Kanpur Ashrama in 1936 and had his Sannyasa in 1948 from Srimat Swami Virajananda ji Maharaj. He was head of Kanpur and Mayavati Advaita Ashrama and also the Editor of the Prabuddha Bharata. He was appointed a Trustee of the Belur Math and a Member of the Governing Body of the Ramakrishna Mission in 1965 and an Assistant Secretary in 1969, in which post he continued till the last. Sweet and genial by nature, the Swami was loved and respected by all who came in contact with him. The Order has lost in him a responsible, devoted, and sincere worker at a comparatively early age.

18 July 1975 : Swami Pranavatmananda (Pashupati): Announced to the Public in August 1975
Swami Pranavatmananda (Pashupati), aged 71, passed away at the Gauhati Ashrama on the 18th July 1975 at 3-30 a.m. due to acute coronary attack. He was leading quite a normal life up to the late at night of the 17th and was found dead on his bed the next morning. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order at Belur Math in 1924 and had Sannyasa from his Guru in 1930. Besides being the head of Gauhati and Contai centres, he worked at Garbeta, Sonargaon, Dinajpur, Rangoon and Rahara centres in different capacity. For many years he was engaged in preaching work through audio-visual equipment. Sweet and jovial by nature, he was loved by all.

19 August 1975 : Swami Divyatmananda (Srinath): Announced to the Public in September 1975
Swami Divyatmananda (Srinath), aged 72, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan on the 19th August 1975 at 9-20 a.m. due to renal failure with diabetes mellitus. For the last several years he had been leading a retired life at Belur Math. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order at the Math in 1923 and had Sannyasa from his Guru in 1929. He severed the organization through its Jamtara, Ponnampet, Deoghar, Bagerhat, Kankhal, Seva Pratishthan and Purulia centres. For some time he was the Sevak of Swami Vijnanananda ji Maharaj. He also wrote a few books in Bengali.

11 October 1975 : Swami Shiveshananda (Dwaraka): Announced to the Public in November 1975
Swami Shiveshananda (Dwaraka), aged 81, passed away at the Seva Pratishthan on 11th October 1975 at 4-25 p.m. due to cerebro-vascular accident. For the last several years he had been leading a retired life at Belur Math. An initiated disciple of Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj, the Swami joined the Order at the Math in 1925 and had Sannyasa from his Guru in 1931. Apart from Belur Math he stayed at Jamtara for some time. Sweet and jovial by nature, he was loved by many.
