16th March 1940 : Swami Nirbharananda (Chandra Baba) : Announced to the Public in April 1940
It is to be recorded with the deepest sorrow that Swami Nirbharananda ji (better known as Chandra Baba) passed away in Varanasi at about 11-15 P.M. On Saturday, the 16th March 1940. He was a disciple of Srimat Swami Trigunatita and was for many years the President of the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama. It was a wonder how in spite of being crippled by rheumatism he was able not only to shoulder that burden and place the Ashrama on sure foundations, but also to build a stone temple of Sri Ramakrishna there. He had been suffering from duodenal ulcer and other ailments for over a year. His passing away removes a great worker and devotee from our midst.
21st June 1940 : Swami Paramananda : Announced to the Public in July 1940
We have to announce with a heavy heart that a cable received on the 23rd June from Sister Gayatridevi informed us of the passing away of Swami Paramananda ji on Friday, the 21st June 1940, at the Boston centre. According to the cable the Swamiji had a sudden heart attack and his body was carried to California on the 23rd June.
2nd November 1940 : Swami Karunananda (Upendra) : Announced to the Public in January 1941
We record with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Karunananda ji at Dhaka on the 2nd November 1940 at the age of 60. He was suffering from tuberculosis for the last one year and a half. He joined the Varanasi Home of Service in 1904, spent many years in the Uttarakhanda and founded the Ashrama at Kishanpur, near Dehra Dun, in 1915. He was a disciple of Srimat Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj, and on account of his health was known as Palwan. Recently he made a trip to Siam.
18th January 1941 : Br. Satyachaitanya (Haridas) : Announced to the Public in April 1941
It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the passing away of Brahmachari Satyachaitanya (Haridas) at Dharampur on the 18th January 1941. He joined the Mission centre at Deoghar in 1930. In 1939 he was transferred to the Advaita Ashrama, Calcutta, where it was detected that he had contracted T.B. He was accordingly first put in the Jadvavpur Hospital and then in the Dharampur Sanatorium, where he was progressing satisfactorily, when the sad news suddenly reached us.
27th February 1941 : Swami Jyotirmayananda (Jyotish) : Announced to the Public in April 1941
It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the passing away of Swami Jyotirmayananda at the Belur Math on the 27th February 1941. He joined the Belur Math in 1916, and at the time of his passing away he was 49 years of age. The Swami was a well-known figure at the Math and had served Guru Maharajji’s cause in various capacities with a singular devotion. He was known particularly for his experience in worship, relief activities and accountancy. The Swami compiled a book about the daily and special worship of Sri Ramakrishna. On the 18th February he got fever, which developed into small-pox, and he breathed his last at about 9-15 p.m. on the 27th.
2nd June 1941: Swami Nirupamananda (Rakhal) : Announced to the Public in July 1941
We record with deep sorrow the untimely passing away at Varanasi of Swami Nirupamananda of the local Home of Service on the 2nd June 1941. Of late he had been suffering from dyspepsia. He had served the institution for about 20 years.
26th July 1941 : Swami Ganeshananda (Amiya) : Announced to the Public in October 1941
The Mission has sustained an irreparable loss in the untimely passing away, on the 26th July 1941, of Swami Ganeshananda, the Founder-Secretary of the Sarisha Branch (24 Parganas), and one of the most outstanding workers of the Order. Details of his life have already appeared in our magazines.
17th August 1941 : Swami Parananda (No. 2) (Padmanabhan): Announced to the Public in October 1941
We are sorry to record the death of Swami Parananda (No. 2) of the Trivandrum Ashrama on the 17th August 1941 at the age of 74.
16th December 1941 : Swami Sahajananda (Nagendra) : Announced to the Public in January 1942
We deeply regret to announce that Swami Sahajananda, who had served the Mission devotedly for about 30 years and who had been in charge of the Vrindaban Sevashrama for the last 10 years, passed away at the Varanasi Sevashrama on the 16th December 1941 at 9-45 P.M. He was 56 years old and had been suffering from diabetes, to which he ultimately succumbed.
23rd December 1941 : Br. Durgachaitanya (Manoranjan) : Announced to the Public in April 1942
We are sorry to record the death of Brahmachari Durgachaitanya (Manoranjan) at the Rangoon Sevashrama in the evening of the 23rd December, 1941. He had been ailing for years. The end was peaceful.
5th April 1942 : Swami Adiswarananda : Announced to the Public in July 1942
We record with a heavy heart the passing away of Swami Adiswarananda on the 5th April 1942, at the Varanasi Home of Service. After serving for a short period at the Kankhal Sevashrama, he had to dissociate himself from all work of the Mission owing to chronic asthma in 1913 and lived mostly outside.
26th June 1942 : Swami Nishkalananda (Jiban Maharaj) : Announced to the Public in October 1942
Swami Nishkalananda (alias Jiban Maharaj) died of Typhoid at Kankhal on the 26th June 1942 at the age of 56. References of him have already been made in our magazines.
21st August 1942 : Br. Shaktichaitanya (Gaur of the Industrial School, Belur) : Announced to the Public in October 1942
Br. Shaktichaitanya (Gaur of the Industrial School, Belur) had a tragic death there from electric shock on the 21st August 1942, at the age of 31. He was a promising worker, and was loved by all for his sweet nature.
3rd September 1942 : Swami Abhinnananda (Hari) : Announced to the Public in October 1942
Swami Abhinnananda (Hari), who was in charge of the Taki Ashrama, succumbed there to a short attack of Coronary Thrombosis on the 3rd September 1942, at the age of 45. He had been in the Order for ten years, and was a very sincere and efficient worker, with a genial temper.
26th February 1943 : Swami Srivasananda (Narayana) : Announced to the Public in April 1943
With deep sorrow we record the passing away of Swami Srivasananda at the age of 75 at Howrah on the 26th February 1943, shortly after midnight. Recently he had been suffering from general weakness due to low blood pressure. The Bangalore and Mysore Ashramas as well as the Vedanta College of Bangalore owed much to his help and initiative. Ever since his joining the Order in 1924, after retiring as a high official of the Mysore State, he was actively engaged in spreading the message of Sri Ramakrishna and Swamiji. By his demise the Organization has lost a staunch devotee and indefatigable worker.
30th May 1943 : Swami Nityananda (Nepal) : Announced to the Public in July 1943
We record with a heavy heart the passing away of Swami Nityananda (alias Nepal) at the Kankhal Sevashrama on the 30th May 1943 at the age of 50, due to a sudden stroke of apoplexy. He founded the Cawnpore Ashrama of which he was in charge till his death. By his demise the Mission has lost a loving and genial soul and an ardent and sincere worker.
(?) June 1943 : Swami Satyeshananda (Sankar of Tangail) : Announced to the Public in October 1943
Swami Satyeshananda (Sankar of Tangail), who had been ailing for a long time passed away in June last under tragic circumstances at Vindhyachal, where he was performing Tapasya. He was aged about 47.
7th September 1943 : Br. Narayan Fenani : Announced to the Public in October 1943
We record with deep sorrow the passing away of Brahmachari Narayan Fenani, aged 34, at Bijapur on the 7th September 1943. He had been associated with the Bombay branch for several years and joined the Belur Math as a probationer in December last. In March he was sent to Bijapur to assist in the Famine Relief Work, where he had an attack of typhoid, to which he succumbed.
18th December 1943 : Swami Srishananda (Basanta) : Announced to the Public in January 1944
Swami Srishananda, alias Basanta, passed away at Varanasi on the 18th December 1943 at the age of 58. He joined the Vrindaban Sevashrama in 1916, was ordained in 1923, and served for many years at the Belur Math. He had been ailing for some time.
26th March 1944 : Swami Tanmayananda (Narayan) : Announced to the Public in April 1944
We record with a heavy heart the passing away of Swami Tanmayananda, aged 57, at the Kankhal Sevashrama on the 26th March 1944, after a brief illness. He joined the Koalpara Ashrama in 1916.
20th May 1944 : Swami Umananda : Announced to the Public in July 1944
Swami Umananda passed away at the Belur Math on the 20th May 1944, at the age of 58, as a result of an attack of Thrombosis the previous day. He joined the Varanasi Home of Service in his youth, and was the founder of the Salkia Seva Sadan. He had been suffering from blood pressure for some years.
31st May 1944 : Swami Swatantrananda (Jatin of Sarisha) : Announced to the Public in July 1944
Swami Swatantrananda (Jatin of Sarisha) passed away at the Math on 31st May 1944 at the age of 45. He joined the Math in 1924, and passed the greater part of his monastic life in the Sarisha Ashrama. Some years ago he had cancer, from which he apparently recovered. A few months ago, he had fever and other troubles, and recently prostration and breathing difficulties. Death was due to failure of heart. He had retained consciousness almost to the end.
7th June 1944 : Swami Ramananda (Kshirode) : Announced to the Public in July 1944
Swami Ramananda (Kshirode) died after a protracted attack of Endocarditis at ‘Udbodhan’ on 7th June 1944 at 2-50 A.M. at the age of 41. At a young age he came in contact with the Swamis of the Order, which he joined in 1932. He had been in indifferent health for several years.
14th June 1944 : Swami Bhaveswarananda (Sridhar / Viswanath) : Announced to the Public in July 1944
Swami Bhaveswarananda, alias Sridhar, died of heart failure on the 14th June 1944 at the Puri Hospital, shortly after his admission. Of late he had been suffering mainly from stomach and liver complaints. He joined the Order in 1919 and was 47 at the time of his passing away.
25 September 1944 : Br. Nishakanta : Announced to the Public in October 1944
Brahmachari Nishakanta, aged 34, passed away at Varanasi on 25 September 1944. He joined the Varanasi Home of Service three years ago, and besides being a good worker was an accomplished musician. Death was due to apoplexy.
(December 1944 ?) : Swami Girijananda ji (Announced to the Public in January 1945)
News has just come that Swami Girijananda ji, who was undergoing treatment for TB in a hospital at Srinagar (Kashmir), has breathed his last. He joined the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama in 1907 at the age of 18 and had sannyasa in 1920. Skilled in Homeopathy, he took part in many relief operations and was for some years Secretary of Vrindaban Sevashrama. Latterly his health was shattered by diabetes, which led to TB. The Swami was much loved for his amiable nature.
29th November 1944: Swami Shivasevananda (Nanda) (Announced to the Public in January 1945)
Swami Shivasevananda, alias Nanda, aged 39, died at Karachi, on the 29th November 1944, under tragic circumstances. He joined the Rangoon Sevashrama in 1925 and was ordained in 1939.
11 December 1944 : Brahmachari Sukhendu : Announced to the Public in January 1945
Brahmachari Sukhendu, aged 29, passed away at the Kankhal Sevashrama on the 11th December 1944, of Encephalitis following an attack of chicken-pox. Though he joined the institution only in 1943, he was a promising worker.
29th January 1945: Swami Dhruveswarananda (Amulya) (Announced to the Public in April 1945)
We record with deep sorrow the passing away of Swami Dhruveswarananda at the Varanasi Sevashrama on the 29th January 1945 at 9-25 pm at the age of 56, as the result of an attack of apoplexy about three hours earlier. He joined the Mayavati Ashrama in 1914 and was a qualified Homeopath.
23rd May 1945: Swami Mahimananda ji (Mahitosh / Br. Mahitoshananda) (Announced to the Public in July 1945)
Swami Mahimananda ji Maharaj, a Trustee of the Math, died of uremia and apoplexy at the Varanasi Home of Service on the 23rd May 1945 at the ripe old age of 82. He joined the Headquarters in 1908. Retiring from work after a few years, he lived at the Advaita Ashrama Varanasi, doing spiritual practices. Noted for self-reliance, he suffered for about a week.
19th June 1945: Swami Chidrupananda (Hiren) (Announced to the Public in July 1945)
Swami Chidrupananda, alias Hiren, died at Katihar of malignant malaria on the 19th June 1945 at the age of 52. He joined the Varanasi Home of Service in 1919 and was ordained in 1926. He was of austere habits and took part in a good many relief activities of the Mission.
30th July 1945: Swami Nityasiddhananda (Bhagavan) (Announced to the Public in October 1945)
We record with sorrow the passing away of Swami Nityasiddhananda (alias Bhagavan) at Bhubaneswar on the 30th July 1945 at 11-32 am at the age of about 69 years. He joined the Order at the Bhubaneswar Math in 1924.
26th March 1946: Swami Amriteswarananda (Paresh) (Announced to the Public in April 1946)
We record with deep pain the sudden passing away of Swami Amriteswarananda through heart failure at the Lahore Ashrama on the 26th March 1946, at 8-45 pm at the age of about 53 years. For the last few years he had been suffering from gout, which subsequently affected his heart. Last year he was at Bombay for about three months and came to Lahore via Karachi on the 23rd February. He was ready to return to the Math when the catastrophe occurred.
An outstanding figure in the Order which he had joined in 1914, he was well known for his qualities of head and heart. He became a Trustee in 1922 and an Assistant Secretary in 1936. His untimely demise deprives us of a very able administrator with unflinching devotion to the cause, whose place can scarcely be filled. His recent infirmities were pressing upon his mind. He has been released from these; the loss is ours.
25th July 1946: Swami Kedareswarananda (Somasundaram) (Announced to the Public in September 1946)
We are very sorry to announce that Swami Kedareswarananda passed away at the Nattarampalli Ashrama (North Arcot) on the 25th July 1946 at 8 am at the age of about 61, from an attack of apoplexy the previous evening.
He joined the Order at Madras in 1923 and was ordained in 1924. He was versed in Tamil Saiva-siddhanta, and was much loved by all for his austere habits and amiable nature.
29th September 1946: Swami Someswarananda (Haricharan) (Announced to the Public in November 1946)
We are sorry to announce that Swami Someswarananda (formerly known as Hari Charan Mullick) passed away at the Cawnpore Ashrama on the 29th September 1946 at about 1-00 pm at the age of 79. He retained his consciousness till the end.
Having joined the Cawnpore Ashrama in 1936, he was working there all along. He had his sannyasa from Swami Vijnanananda ji in 1937. He knew Homeopathy, and was much loved for his amiable nature.
24th December 1946: Swami Paramananda II (Manmath / Upendra) (Announced to the Public in January 1947)
We are sorry to record the death from heart failure of Swami Paramananda II (of Gaya), aged 69, at the Varanasi Home of Service in the early hours of the 24th December 1946. He had his initiation from Srimat Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj and joined the Belur Math about 1904. He worked for a number of years at the Mayavati Ashrama. Latterly he had been suffering from rheumatism.
9th January 1947: Swami Megheswarananda (Hiralal) (Announced to the Public in February 1947)
Swami Megheswarananda (Hiralal), aged 51, died of heart failure following an attack of asthma, at Ajmer, on the 9th January 1947. He had joined the Belur Math in 1919, had his sannyasa in 1923, and worked at the Kuala Lumpur (F.M.S.), Narayanganj and Patna centres.
16th January 1947: Swami Akhilatmananda (Prakash Maharaj) (Announced to the Public in February 1947)
Swami Akhilatmananda (Prakash Maharaj of Faridpur), aged 64, passed away at the Belur Math on the 16th January 1947. He had renounced the world in 1928 and started the Faridpur centre. He was initiated into sannyasa in 1931. He had been suffering for some time past from various complaints, to which he succumbed.
11th March 1947: Swami Achalananda ji (Kedar Baba) (Announced to the Public in April 1947)
We are very sorry to record the passing away, after a brief illness, at the age of 70, of Swami Achalananda ji Maharaj (alias Kedar Baba), Vice-president of the Math and Mission, on the 11th March 1947, at 8-25 am at the Varanasi Home of Service. He joined the Belur Math in 1900, was a disciple of Swamiji and had sannyasa from him in May 1902. One of the pioneers of the Varanasi Home of Service, he became Vice-president in 1938. He was much loved and sought after for his sweet nature and spiritual life. His health having broken down long ago, a was panting for release from the body. But his passing away is a very great loss to the Order.
5th March 1947: Swami Mahadevananda (Matilal) (Announced to the Public in April 1947)
We are grieved to report the death of Swami Mahadevananda, aged 56, at Araria (Bihar), on the 5th March 1947, at 3-35 pm from a protracted attack of dysentery. He had his initiation from the Holy Mother, joined the Koalpara Ashrama in 1909 and was ordained in 1920 by Srimat Swami Shivananda ji. He was for a number of years head of the Dhaka centre.
20th July 1947: Swami Vipulananda (Mylvaganam) (Announced to the Public in August 1947)
We are very sorry to announce the passing away of Swami Vipulananda from a stroke due to high blood pressure, at Colombo on the 20th July 1947, at 1-10 am, at the age of 55. Ever since an attack of typhoid in 1944, he had been in indifferent health. On the 30th June last he returned to the Colombo Ashrama from a town in South India, where he had been working hard on his book on ancient Tamil music, which he succeeded in publishing that month. He fell ill on the 10th July, with symptoms of paralysis, kidney troubles, etc, and was removed on the 15th to a private hospital, where despite the best care he succumbed.
His body was brought back to the Ashrama and taken by the night train to Batticaloa, 217 miles from Colombo, where, after big processions and funeral speeches from representatives of the University of Ceylon and other public bodies, it was buried next night in the compound of the Shivananda Vidyalaya, Kalladi Uppodai.
Joining the Madras Math in 1922, Swami Vipulananda was ordained by Srimat Swami Shivananda ji in 1924. A great Tamil scholar and an impressive lecturer, he was instrumental in starting several educational institutions in Ceylon, including the one at Batticaloa. For some years he was the editor of Vedanta Kesari, Prabuddha Bharata and Sri Ramakrishna Vijayam (Tamil). From 1931 to 1933 he served as the Professor of Tamil and Dean of Oriental Studies in the Annamalai University, and since 1943 he was the Professor of Tamil in the University of Ceylon. By his death the Order has lost a distinguished member.
30th August 1947: Swami Chidghanananda (Rajendra Babu) (Announced to the Public in September 1947)
We are very sorry to announce the passing away of Swami Chidghanananda, alias Rajendra Babu, aged 75, on the 30th August 1947, at 4-30 pm at the Varanasi Home of Service, which he joined in 1940, which was also the year he got his sannyasa. He was an erudite Sanskrit scholar and an indefatigable worker in the field of Hindu religious literature. He has left many valuable books, and taught a good many of our Swamis and Brahmacharins. By his demise the Order has lost a scholarly monk and a loving soul.
13th September 1947: Swami Sadbhavananda (Hemendra) (Announced to the Public in October 1947)
We deeply regret to announce that Swami Sadbhavananda, aged 57, died of heart failure in the morning of the 13th September 1947, at Mihijam (S.P.). He joined the Dhaka centre in 1917 and was initiated into Sannyasa by Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1923. He was the founder-Secretary of the Deoghar Vidyapith, which he untiringly served for many years. Despite his poor health, he, as Secretary of the Asansol Ashrama, made substantial improvements in its condition. Lately, for reasons of health, he retired from all work and lived mostly at Mihijam. By his passing away, the Order has lost a sincere and indefatigable worker.
22nd November 1947: Swami Anantananda (Kanai / Baldeo) (Announced to the Public in December 1947)
We are very sorry to announce the sudden passing away of Swami Anantananda, alias Kanai, aged 57, on the 22nd November 1947 in a private Nursing Home at Mangalore (South Canara). The Swami was touring in South India. After visiting Trichur, Calicut and Coimbatore, he went to Mangalore on the 19th November. On the 20th night he had excruciating stomach ache. The next day he was removed to the Nursing Home. On examination, the disease was found to be the bursting of a duodenal ulcer which he had had for long. At 1.30 pm on the 22nd he passed away peacefully.
The Swami was a jovial soul. He joined the Varanasi Home of Service in 1910 and was ordained in 1921. He had the privilege of serving Swami Turiyananda ji Maharaj at Varanasi. For some time he worked as the warden of the Madras Students’ Home.
18th December 1947: Br. Ram Maharaj (Atul Krishna) (Announced to the Public in January 1948)
We are very sorry to announce the passing away of Brahmachari Ram Maharaj, aged 76, at the Varanasi Home of Service, on the 18th December 1947, at 10.30 am, after a brief attack of urimasa [uremia ?]. He had the privilege of coming into personal contact with Swamiji, had his initiation from the Holy Mother Sri Maharaj [vide Announced to the Public in Feb. 1948], and joined the Belur Math in 1903, remaining a Naishthika Brahmachari till the end. He was of austere habits, which told upon his health. So he had to spend the latter part of his life mostly at the Almora Ashrama, of which he was the head for a good many years. Last year he came down to the Headquarters for a final leave-taking, as it were. Even then he was suffering from heart and kidney troubles. He left Almora for Varanasi on the 4th November last. He was a great devotee of sterling virtues, and was full of sweetness. Many were benefited by his company. By his passing away the Order has lost a familiar spiritual figure.
4th February 1948: Swami Amareshananda (Bholanath) (Announced to the Public in March 1948)
Swami Amareshananda, alias Bholanath, of the Varanasi Advaita Ashrama, aged 55 years, died of apoplexy on the 4th February 1948 morning. For some time past he had been suffering from low blood pressure, and had a stroke on the 3rd February. He was immediately removed to the Sevashrama where he expired. He joined the Belur Math in 1919 and was ordained in 1924. He remained mostly at the Varanasi Advaita ashrama, where he served its President, Swami Nirbharananda who was a cripple, for years with heart and soul. In his death we have lost a very sincere worker.
15th February 1948: Swami Gauravananda (Haridas) (Announced to the Public in March 1948)
Swami Gauravananda, alias Harida, died at the ripe old age of 81 at the Belur Math on the 15th February 1948 at 6-30 pm. For several years he had been in indifferent health and, besides, lost his eyes after a cataract operation. In the night of the 14th as also in the morning of the 15th February, he almost lost consciousness for a time owing to a dilated heart, to which he finally succumbed. He was conscious at the time of his death. He joined the Koalpara Ashrama in 1917 and had his Sannyasa from Swami Saradananda ji the same year. Lattterly he spent most of his time in prayer.
13th August 1948: Swami Dhruvananda (Amulya) (Announced to the Public in September 1948)
We regret very much to announce the demise of Swami Dhruvananda, aged 64, at Daharkunda (Hooghly) on the 13th August 1948 at 2 am. For about a year and a half he was suffering from various ailments which, of late, made him bed-ridden.
Swami Dhruvananda joined the Koalpara Ashrama in December 1911, got the blessings of the Holy Mother and was formally ordained in 1916. He was a loving soul and spent most of his time serving the people of Koalpara and Jayrambati (Bankura) and those of Arambagh sub-division (Hooghly).
15th November 1948: Swami Jayananda (Babaji / Dhirendra) (Announced to the Public in December 1948)
We are sorry to announce that Swami Jayananda, alias Babaji, aged 56, passed away at Dhanbad on the 15th Nov. 1948, at 7-40 pm from an attack of typhoid, followed by double pneumonia. For some time past he had been suffering from high blood pressure.
He joined Vrindaban Sevashrama in December, 1920, and was initiated into Sannyasa in 1926. He was in charge of the Midnapore Sevashrama for a short time.
20th March 1949: Swami Sanatanananda (Kartik) (Announced to the Public in April 1949)
We regret to announce the demise of Swami Sanatanananda, alias Kartik Maharaj, aged 82, at the Belur Math on the 20th March 1949, at about 9-30 pm. Having joined the Belur Math in 1926, he lived a life of strenuous service to rural people in the local Ashrama at Daharkundu (Hooghly). He came to Belur at the end of 1944. He had been suffering for the last few years from Asthma, to which he ultimately succumbed.
10th June 1949: Br. Matrikachaitanya (Gauri Mohan) (Announced to the Public in July 1949)
We are sorry to announce the unexpected demise of Brahmachari Matrikachaitanya (alias Gouri Mohan Mitra), aged about 60 years, from heart failure at the Balaram Mandir on Friday, the 10th June 1949 at 7:10 pm. He came to Math to pay his respects to the President Maharaj on his birthday. After returning in the evening to the Balaram Mandir, where he had been staying, he was feeling very uneasy and restless, owing to a sudden heart attack, to which he succumbed at 7:10 pm.
Brahmachari Matrikachaitanya was associated with the Order from his early life. He formally joined the Kankurgachhi Yogodyan in February 1946 and was initiated into Brahmacharya this year on Sri Guru Maharaj’s tithipuja day. Just a couple of months ago he was appointed Secretary of the Nivedita School. He was partly instrumental in the amalgamation of the Kankurgachhi Yogodyan.
19th August 1949: Swami Vishweshwaranananda (Kapil Maharaj) (Announced to the Public in September 1949)
We regret to announce the passing away of Swami Vishweshwaranananda (Kapil Maharaj), aged 69, at the Varanasi Home of Service on Friday, the 19th August, at 4.20 pm. He had been suffering from heart trouble and asthma for the last one year. Recently he had attacks of kidney trouble which developed into uremia to which he ultimately succumbed.
Swami Vishweshwaranananda joined the Belur Math in 1908. He was Manager of the Udbodhan Office for some years. Since the retirement from work he had been spending most of his time in East Bengal. For the last two years or so he was staying at the Varanasi Sevashrama.
13th December 1949: Swami Kalikananda (Kalicharan) (Announced to the Public in January 1950)
We are sorry to announce the passing away of Swami Kalikananda, aged 70, at the Varanasi Home of Service on 13th December 1949 at 3.45 am. For some time he was in indifferent health and was brought to the Sevashrama during the first week of December, when he had an attack of coronary spasm, developing into coronary thrombosis to which he succumbed in the early hours of the 13th December.
Swami Kalikananda joined the Varanasi Sevashrama in 1913 and was ordained in January, 1921. He was in charge of the Varanasi Sevashrama for a few years. By his demise the Math and Mission lost a Sannyasi of sterling virtues and amiable nature.
18th May 1950: Swami Bodhananda ji (Haripada) (Announced to the Public in June 1950)
We are extremely sorry to announce the passing away of Swami Bodhananda ji Maharaj at the Roosevelt Hospital, New York, on Thursday, the 18th May 1950, at the age of 79 years.
He joined the Alambazar Math in 1897 and was initiated into Sannyasa by Swamiji in the same year. In April, 1906, he was sent to New York to assist Swami Abhedananda ji in his growing activities in USA. Next year he took charge of a new Vedanta Centre in Pittsburgh. In 1912 he succeeded Swami Abhedananda ji as head of the New York centre. During his leadership the present building of the Vedanta Society was purchased. He once visited India in 1923. For some time he was suffering from prostate problem. In the afternoon of the 14th May he entered the Roosevelt Hospital and on the 18th May at 3-15 pm he passed away in the course of the operation.
Swami Bodhananda ji led a life of rigid austerity and discipline, and was loved and respected by all who came into intimate contact with him. By his passing away the Ramakrishna Order has lost one of the few surviving sannyasin disciple of Swamiji.
7th July 1950: Swami Bhaskarananda (Announced to the Public in August 1950)
We are extremely sorry to announce the demise of Swami Bhaskarananda at the RG Kar Medical College Hospital, Calcutta, on the 7th July 1950, at 8.00 am. For some time he had been suffering from gout and other ailments at the Tamluk Sevashrama and had both the legs paralyzed. He was removed to the above hospital for treatment during the last week of June. The paralysis spread to the upper part also and the end came on the 7th July.
The Swami joined the Vrindaban Sevashrama in 1916 and was initiated into Sannyasa in 1924. He spent a pretty long period in the Chandipur Ashrama.
